Looking to set up a surveillance video camera for the driveway and backyard, would appreciate any recommendations. Preferable a unit that will only record when triggered by motion and wireless.

Thanks

Ubiquiti makes some pretty good cameras (both outdoor and indoor). They also provide comprehensive software for centralized monitoring. You can set up motion record to record either on an SD card that you plug into the camera or on a PC running NVR.

These are not wireless though. Honestly, the wireless ones that I've seen don't work very well.

Thanks for the input, this is quite different from most products I have seen on the web, they look very professional. I will do some research

To be fair, depending on what you're looking to do, the amount of features and options that Ubiquiti's AirVision suite provides may be overwhelming. It is true that they are targeting more professional applications, but they have a very large home user group as well. I have one of their airCamDome units, and I don't even use the whole airVision software suite. I just use the camera's web interface which has a more limited subset of functionality, but for basic viewing and motion record, it's enough. You are limited to setting up only one motion zone though.

The best thing about their cams is that they are very stable. They don't freeze up or reset themselves like was the case with a cheaper TrendNet IP cam that I had before. Plus the TrendNet would trigger the motion record for no reason most of the time, regardless of sensitivity setting. It was just a piece of junk. But maybe there are other IP cams there that are better. I looked at a bunch on Amazon and they all had rather mixed reviews though.

something like that for 99$ ?

cisco wireless pan tilt?

to get good motion activation though you need to get high priced 300$+ camera

the cheap ones just use light level differences and if its set to high a sensitivity clouds set it off.. and to low and it wont go off with people etc.

They're around $100 or so. The outdoor aircam does not have an SD card slot. The other two (Dome and Mini) do.

That Cisco one that Rand posted looks pretty good and has wireless which is convenient. It does not have as high of a resolution as airCam, but its motion sensing is probably superior and it looks like it may work better in low light situations. Still, a bunch of mixed reviews on it on Amazon. Might want to read through them before you pull the trigger. Still, if you can get it for only $99, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

True. Maybe not clouds as this would be too slow of a motion to trigger, but shadow cast by tree branches being blown by the wind can certainly set it off. So can sudden light such as light from car headlights at night. It's not perfect, but with careful positioning and selection of motion zone and sensitivity you can get it to work reasonably well.

alot of the bad reviews for the cisco center around its not so great software and its OEM price of 300$

for 100$ its pretty acceptable. IMO

I'm running 4 camera nightowl system for about 7 months. Can connect through mobile device or browser. Motion detection and the works. No fees. Had 1 camera go out in bad storm but warranty is 1 year and they covered it. My cameras are little cheap and do not have best color but are ok and night vision is okay.

lol. I don't even know guns....but when I saw that "jargon" I figured it had to be "guns"

Well....a rotweiler would work too I suppose :X haha.

Google has some cool pix though :P No action shots though lol....

That being said.....have you checked your big box stores? My local Walmart just got a big "security cam" display set up over in the Photo/Electronics departmnet......granted...we are in the "lower income" city than the other 3 "local" WM stores.....so likely why they chose the display for our particular store

Just an ideer. lol....

If I may add to this post, I have a very good system that two cameras are now needed for it. I am having trouble finding a good set of cameras. I bought a pack from radio shack and they were awful!!
I do not mind paying a little more for quality
