Similar to another thread on this page, I am no longer able to find German Castrol at ANY of my local Autzone stores here in MD

I am now looking for an alternative that will allow for similar OCI's (~10K miles) and that can stand up to a bit of abuse.

I went to Walmart earlier today and found some Royal Purple 5w-30 and bought 5 quarts, but am now beginning to regret it given that I came up with more negative than positive search results for it on this site.

My question is, should I take the RP back and get something else?

I use a Honda S2000 Toyo Roki oil filter and with the GC at 10K OCI's, the engine would only burn about ~1/2 quart of oil or so (if that makes a difference).

I really don't want to have to order Amsoil, etc. but will do so if I have to.

So what do you guys think? RP? Pennzoil Platinum? M1? Also, what weight would you recommend for each in this application?

Thanks for the help!

I would think the PP would be fine for you depending on how hard you run your Si. Probably any brand name synthetic would be fine. I used Castrol in my Civic at 10K intervals without any issues.

I don't have the figures in front of me, but I would imagine RP to be quite a bit thinner than German Castrol with GC being about 12.2 cSt @ 100C. If your Honda engine is used to running an oil of that thickness, I would think that finding an oil similar to GC's thickness would be the way to go.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping to do. The K20a3, indeed, seems to like a "thicker" oil.

As of right now, Amsoil appears to be out of the running. It's just way too expensive. If worst comes to worst, I'd rather just cut my OCI's back rather than have to order that stuff. I can see spending more money on Amsoil for things like gear lube, ATF, etc. but if I can find something that performs close to it @ Walmart, that's the way I'd like to go...

I have several suggestions: 1. Valvoline Full Synthetic Maxlife 5w-30 (11.5 cst @ 100c or thereabouts) - this is a thicker 30w, is easily found and is BMW LL-01 approved, so long OCIs look possible; 2. Elf Excellium Full Tech 0w-30 (very close to GC, LL-01, a thick 30w at 12.5 Cst@100c, but tough to find - expensive, too.); 3. The new Mobil 1 high mileage 10w-30 (also a 30w on the thick side).

Oh, I forgot - have you thought about the BMW 5w-30 available at BMW dealerships. It's made by Castrol, but I do not know if it is similar in formula to GC. This is also a thick 5w-30, but I'm not sure if I'd run it 10000 miles. Just another idea. My Honda likes the thicker stuff too, and when my GC stash runs out, I will probably go with the Maxlife or the Elf. I'm curious about the Bimmer oil, though.

I have the same engine and I don't burn any type oil, inc the GC I have in now. Since that engine runs 20 weight ok, a regular 30 weight at 10cSt would be fine. Going forward, MaxLife Synth or AMSoil 0w-30 would be some to consider. Motorcraft 5w-30 might be great too if your OCI is more like 5000mi.

neighbor has been using CASTROL SYNTEC in his 2000 (or 01 ?) HONDA Civic 4 door sedan since 10,000 miles and now has over 230,000 miles and still going strong . Mostly highway miles .

I'm thinking High Mileage Mobil 1 10W-30 would be pretty close to the thickness of GC. Their 0W-40 might work too. Both should be available at Walmart.
