Recently aquired an '06 Chevy Cobalt - 111K miles. Plan to do a couple of ATF drain and fills.

I know that Maxlife Dex/Merc states it's recommended for (among other things) Dex-VI but I don't know all the ins and outs of the specs. Would this be a good choice? If not what would you recommend?

I've got Valvoline Dex VI in both vehicles with no problems. The Impala originally had Dex 3, the Dex VI gave us some shifting improvement. I'm happy with it.

I'd go with a legit dex VI, any is as good as any else. Walmart, advance, amazon, etc.

IIRC those cars have "lifetime" fills so changing at 111k, while a good idea, might not be reversing "neglect". My wife's HHR transmission shifted great and looked great at 135k with unknown history when I changed its fluid and filter.

Maxlife dex merc is a very high quality synthetic fluid and great in that application. If you use genuine DexronVI they are all pretty much the same with very small variations in the base oils. I use Supertech DexronVI in my 4T65e and I'm changing to Maxlife soon. I prefer flushing with DexronVI from Supertech since it's a quality fluid and only about 4$ per quart.

Another vote for Maxlife.

But if you must have something with an official license, I recommend Mag 1 Low-Vis ATF. Available on Amazon for very cheap, and at Pep Boys at a still-reasonable price.

Make sure which ever Dex VI you use it is
officially licensed by GM.

Valvoline Dex VI at least up til recently was NOT licensed by GM!

According to this list, Valvoline DexronVI is licensed:
