These build on the first gen (1998-2006) Volvo S80 chassis can be a good option based having just put about 3K miles on our "new to us" 2006 Ford Five Hundred. One might avoid the 2005-2007 years that had the CVT transmission which I think was mostly used in the AWD versions. The 2008-2009 models all had the Ford/GM 6 speed auto. Our 2006 500 is FWD with the Aisin Warner AWF21 6 speed auto which seems to be a solid auto transmission.

There are a world of great vehicles <$10K with years of life left in them.
