99 Tracer (3rd generation) 5 speed manual.

Differential making lots of noise again. Good source for rebuild kits, or reman transmission?

Might consider rebuilding the differential only as the transmission shifts quite nicely. Synchros are broken in. If the differential gear and its drive gear are badly worn where to get new?

I saw kits for $150 to $200 and reman trans online for around $1000. Don't know who to trust for a reman. Repair shop wants about $3000 to do the job which is probably reasonable. I have rebuilt manual transmissions in the past, decades ago. Have the Ford Escort/Tracer factory shop manual.

Have bottom crossmember off for something else. able to remove the transmission that route?

That sounds like a trip to U-Pullit. That is what I would do since a lot of the skills for setting up clearances have just disappeared. I may be hard to find one though since most salvage yards parted and crush those long ago.

I looked at U-Pullit type places. Those cars I saw had 150,000 + miles on them and did not look like they were well cared for. A royal pain removing the engine/transmission unit through the top if you have to go that route. Don't want to do that again in a year or so if the salvage yard trans goes south.

My tracer has been garaged for 7+ plus years and is in near pristine shape with over 200,000 miles on it.Plan to use it for road trips. A lot more comfortable than the Fiesta hatch. Has new engine in it.

Wouldn't it be just the bearings that need replacing? If so they should have pretty standard part numbers etched on the race. Easy to find replacements. Just don't get Chinese.
