Most foreign cars have a drain plug on the rear differential. Use some good quality GL-5 like Amsoil Severe Gear or Mobil 1 LS. Change it every 100K then.

Some people never change their gear oil and never have a problem. Others don't, and end up having to do pricey repairs at 80,000 miles.
I change the oil regularly simply because I never know if I will be in situation #2.

Would not changing the fluid cause problems on a simple open diff or is a manufacturer fault?

The most common issue I see with RWD vehicles that have live axles is roached axle shafts, where the bearing rides on the outer end of the axle. Second is pinion shaft bearings.
I'm not going to run diff oil more than 50k miles, even if synthetic. That's far enough for me. Diffs don't take a whole lot of fluid.
