The car is a 91 318i...
My driveline has an odd whine that occurs especially when acceleratin in any gear through the 3000 RPm mark, at say, 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.
From earlier searches and posts, I decided to put redline 75w-90 in.
When I drained the old fluid (about 1 year, 10k mi old), which I had done by the BMW dealer, it was a grayish brown murky color, definitely not clear or just plain dark... it resembled muddy water, and stunk of sulfur. Is this any sign of my diff being on its way out?
My one worry is that I didnt fill it all the way. I filled it with the first bottle of redline (say .75qt because some was spilled at first and then I used a bit to rinse a superflo diff oil bottle, so I could have a bottle with a nipple) and fed it in via a length of hose. At that point none came out. I then put thew other quart into the superflo bottle, and started filling it. I filled it until it dribbled out, and then pulled the heater most all of the way out, and squeezed more out so it dribbled from the hole a bit. I tried to feel in there to make sure, but when I stuck my finger in I couldnt feel the difference between the oil and air, but I could tell that when I pulled my finger out, a lot more oil dribbled as compared to usual.
I capped it and drove it around. No discernable difference in noise when going around the block... We shall see tomorrow.
Overall, I worry that 1) did I fill it in an acceptable way to ensure it filled properly? 20 How do I tell if the diff does not have enough oil? Would I hear clicking noises or something (I always hear groaning through the drivetrain as told earlier, so thats not an iundicator for me)?
