Really Dislike Those Solid Color Vehicles

I mainly dislike the manufacturers charging anywhere from $395 to $995 extra for $17 worth of paint. Some of them are charging for every color except maybe one choice even.
My complaint is with the development of robots and high tech spray booths we seem to have fewer interior and exterior colors available. I think I read somewhere that in 1974 Buick had something like 12 interior color options and just as many exterior colors.
 
I'd prefer most stronger "solid color" paint job than nearly all "metallic" finishes as the solid colors last longer.

Case by case....
How about the color changing paint like Ford offered on the mustang, and Lincoln's back in the day? Ford called it chromaflair. Now if you damage it there's no "touch up" as you more or less have to respray the entire vehicle.

They say the automakers pick colors for leasees so they won't offend anybody, and be able to sell the car a second time. Kinda like kitchen cabinets being painted in "flipper grey."

As buyers, we probably want something on the lot, now, vs some weirdly optioned special order color scheme, too. At least as an aggregate large enough to care about financially.
 
Around 1990, my good friend bought a '68 El Camino in "cement gray". The plan was a frame-on semi resto-mod; it finaaly got painted some late model shade of Cadillac dark metallic green with the typical white stipes. It's been ~20 years and it's still not back together. I'll probably be dead by the time it gets back on the road.

I recenty worked in a cabinet shop for a few years; one day these olive colored painted cabinets came out of the paint shop. These things were hideous. I did go to the job site to see them after they were installed. They didn't look half bad. They still looked ALL bad.
 
I suppose we could always go back to some of the weird colors of days gone by. Remember the metallic pink some GM cars came in? I think the official name for it was "Raspberry". Or the metallic light green.... Ford used it too. Somewhere I have a picture of a Fox-body Mustang in metallic light green.

Someday we'll look back at the current popular "front porch and cellar door gray" vehicles and cringe.
 
I do like some of the colors that you mention the same as I also like the BLACK(or other color) painted top of a vehicle. I don’t like’em enough to buy any of them or pay the extra money because I don’t believe they’ll age well style wise. I’m even kind of keen on many bright orange(Terra-cotta) paint on some vehicles especially w/ black roof. Doesn’t mean that I would buy one though.

It’s sort of like when many ‘70s - ‘00s cars had a two tone paint scheme with a different color on the bottom half such as many domestic cars and LEXUS. Our 1st gen RX300 was pearl white metallic w/ light gray metallic on the lower half.

I actually still have a two tone paint on the FORMULA in my signature. I like them in the period that they were built in.

Some of the bland color names you all mention here are hilarious and absolutely suitable.

Cement Grey
Wooden Door Brown
Egg White
Asphalt black
Wet shirt white
Overcast grey
soggy cereal brown
Corpse grey
50 shades grey

Hilarious. Boring names for boring colors!
