Re-using Used Pennzoil Platinum 5w30

I had to change my oil so I can send in a new UOA sample in 6 weeks to see if Thermagasket fixed my head gasket leak. I hated to waste the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 with only 650 miles on it so I drained it into a clean pan and poured it into a clean plastic gallon jug.

Any harm in me pouring it back in my engine someday? It may have traces of coolant in it but if the head gasket is now fixed, most of the harmful stuff would quickly evaporate.

If you have a HG problem there may be contaminants in the oil. New HG new oil.

If the test comes back clean, I'd have no problem using that oil as "top off" oil in the same vehicle.

Throw AWAY the oil.

*ANY* coolant will NOT burn off. It WILL do DAMAGE to the engine.

Repeat after me. Oil is good, Oil with coolant in it is BAD.

Bad gets thrown away.

Sounds like a plan but I may recycle it after all.

I saved that Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 but I can always change my mind and recycle it.

I would wait for the used oil analysis results first to see what the lab says. If there is no traces of coolant in the oil then reuse it.

I would take it to the recycler. Better safe than sorry.

even .5% of of coolant in oil can cause catastrophic failure.

Oil is cheap enough I'd feel bad but I'd recycle it regardless.

also if you have to open the engine to fix it.. put something cheap in it so you can change it out again without feeling bad.

Yes but that oil won't be analyzed. It's the Castrol GTX 5w30 in it now that will be tested in about 5 weeks from now. I'm getting confused.

So your saying the PP you had in the vehicle for 650 miles was prior to changing the head gasket? In that case it would depend on if the leak was internal or external. Need more info!

Hi.

I put the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in and sent my old oil out for used oil analysis - it was Syntec 10-30. Then the used oil analysis said I had coolant traces in oil. Later I applied Thermagasket to cooling system. So, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 was contaminated until I treated CS with TG.

It's probably best that I toss the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and try to use lesser quality oil until I hopefully get this problem solved. I have Castrol GTX 5w30 in it now that I got on sale at AAP.

Its a Nissan Sentra. Internal head gasket most likely. (they are known for that.)

The GTX is just as good as the PP you took out for normal OCIs. It protects just as well.

Love the "lesser quality oil" statement. I guess the spew here is working...

Don't reuse it.

Why risk damage to the engine for $20 worth of PP?

If you suspect coolant in the oil I'd recycle it.
