If I need to breach a vapor barrier in a car door, what is the best product to re-seal the membrane to the sheet metal?

Thanks!

3M makes a special product just for this. I forget the name, but they do make a rope adhesive for the exact application.

Right, I want it to be like what MB would use as OE. I assume it isn't glue...

The few times I have dismantled doors, I have found the OEM sealant to be re-usable. You can pull it off, reform it into a bead, and re-apply. Just my experience. It does take some patience.

I actually use the blue painters masking tape. I had issues with my geo metro door handle linkage and had to enter the door about once every 6 months for several years. The tape is easy to remove on re-entry.

Duct tape can get dry and powdery in the sun, or exposed to weather.
Not always, and some tapes are far better than others.

For this use, duct tape is great.

I was in a pinch so I grabbed some of that foil tape that's used to seal kitchen exhaust fan ducting. The adhesive doesn't seem to dry out as fast. I like it because it can be formed around the odd door panel shapes. It's kind of pricey, though.

Gorilla tape. So tough it'll probably save you in the case of a side-impact crash.

Well, maybe not that tough, but it's pretty tough.

Dare you to stick it to your arm, if you've got hairy arms.

The pliable, sticky black caulk-like stuff that some European manufacturers use is called butyl tape.

I know it's available through the Volvo and BMW parts systems, but there are probably less expensive sources.
