Re-attach Vinyl on Interior Trim Panels

The interior of my 82 300cd is pretty nice. Great wood, no cracks in the dash, etc. Problem is the rear interior panel where it curves up to make the pilliar for where the seatbelt comes out (pilliarless coupe so it just ends at choulder height and is hidden by the curvature of this panel), has some separation of the vinyl from the backerboard.

So it is this panel:

We have separation of the vinyl from the backer, almost like the vinyl shrunk, causing it to peel and come up.

Is fixing this properly and cleanly a DIY job or do I need to use a pro? If I can DIY, I assume Ill want to warm the vinyl and then pull it and adhere it bit by bit to ensure it is well stretched to the backer.

What is the right product to stick this on with? I assume some glue. The backer seems like a cross between fiberboard and cardboard.

Any tips would be appreciated.

You should be able to glue it back on with 3M Supertrim or 77 spray adhesive. It works like contact cement where you spray both sides, and wait until it's tacky before putting together. The trick will be to avoid overspray contamination. I'm presently doing a similar door panel job on my 01 Sable.

What do you mean? Im spraying inside of a gap between backer and vinyl...

Won't you want to spray right to the edge of the material?

I would use a hot glue gun. My sons car had same ploblem and it worked perfect.

Yeah, but I kind of figured if I spray or squeeze a product into the gap, as I pull and tug on it and push it flat, it would squeeze excess to the edge to wipe off.

The underside is hidden, and there is actually a chrome strip that goes along the whole edge (kind of crimped on, not sure how the PO got it off).

I don't know how pliable that vinyl is, but I've used fabric glue to stick cloth inserts back onto door panels. I'd be cautious of spray adhesives if there is some sort of foam there. I tried using headliner spray to glue back a corner that had detached on one of our cars and it "melted" the foam backing.
