So I have some .rar (avi) files and can't seem to extract/play them... i installed the program called "rar" in Ubuntu but that didn't help either ...

what other programs are there for Ubuntu?
and after installing whatever program, do i right click on the file and select 'extract here'? (that's what I did after installing 'rar', but didn't work, it just gave me the window showing that it was extracting but nothing happened...

any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best program to use is something called UNRAR. Install that and then follow the prompts. I added a link UNRAR how to

Once you installed that type unrar x filename.rar Check out the link if you have any further questions,

Open synaptic and search "unrar" then install it. unrar-free may not work, you want just regular unrar. If that choice doesn't appear you may need to install the medibuntu repositories. Google will help there.

Using Synaptic Package Manager download and install p7zip-full that should do the trick.

Supports 7z, ZIP, Zip64, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM, ISO & DEB archives.

97tird - As I understand it, there is a free, open source program to open .rar files BUT it is always a version or so behind the official format; probably due to the fact that it has to be reverse-engineered. Ubuntu does include the non-free unrar program; but all of open- and closed-source rar programs are command line. They can be used, however, by GUI programs like 7-zip, file-roller and xarchiver.
