That's sort of like "My water pump needs replaced". I see that all the time.

This topic pops up (like a long-dead corpse bobbing up to the surface of a lake) from time to time. Since I think it's rather appropriate language for an oil forum, I'm going to quote my earlier response to another poster years ago who wondered why we care so much about "grammer" [sic] in this forum:

Because it's part of proper human communication.

English may have weird spelling and lots of exceptions to its rules, but we accept that as a tradeoff for the turbocharged power this language gives us . . . when we use it properly.

Change your verb tenses as appropriate, keep the subject-verb agreement topped off, properly inflate the spelling, and English will serve you for many years.

My favorite was always the use of the term "celanoid" to describe the electric plunger mounted on the started. I know that observation is a bit of a stretch for this topic, but that one cracks me up.

I think that's a color.

No, wait. Miss Linda says that's "celadon." Never mind.

its
it's

My head knows it's its when I mean possession, but my fingers don't....and insist on adding that ' all the time...and then my eyes burn every time I look up at the offense...

Back to my point...spelling doesn't bother me unless it results in confusion regarding meaning...though there're a lot of examples of "mis-usage" these days...lately heard...

....there're used here when MOST TIMES, if not all the time, THERE'S is used in this type of case...

authoritative figure used instead of authority figure...just heard this morning on TV...though I knew what he meant...

ancient law instead of arcane law...THAT kind of mistake changes the meaning for the listener, and apparent intent by the speaker..

...and....

defiantly instead of definitely...a mistake incorrectly made all the time BY SPELL-CHECK...

Here at work, its coarse vs. course.

In a sentence about roadway surfaces, both could make an appearance: "The contractor used coarse sand and gravel for the road's granular base course material".

I've seen reports we've mailed to clients where one or both were used incorrectly. And spell check would never catch it.

You're post is quiet insulting and its making me loose my mind. Im just hear to learn about how to get my breaks fixed. So, if you could recommend me some good parts for that without using your fancy lingo and cymbols, I'll be on my way.

Now listen up. This is a serious discussion of English sentence structure and any funny business will not be tolerated, but it will be graded on content and humor. You now must submit a 6,000 word essay on how to punk u wait a sentence, lol.

I just remembered another. I "should of" checked my oil before starting the engine, although it "wouldn't of" made a difference. If people would stop and think of the literal meanings of the words "should/would/could" and "of" they would realize that it doesn't make any sense.

Oh, and if you use the letter "a" in the word "definitely," then you're DEFINITELY an "A"-hole!

While we're being pedantic...

That money you get from the IRS after you file a 1040 is not a tax return. It's a tax refund. The 1040 is the tax return.

Magazines have springs, clips do not. Cartridges go in the firearm, bullets come out.

Right! And, it's, "You're welcome," not "your welcome."

Also, it's either ATM, or automated teller machine, not "ATM machine."

So many of us had no education, or very little, yet many are extremely talented in other ways; mechanics for example. You all are judging these people and suggesting they are ignorant thereby discouraging them from participating.

Ease up folks, its a GD forum for all, not a language test.

I agree wholeheartedly with the exception of mechanics. There are a few literate mechanics.

I personally do not care. As long as I can decipher the intent, I am fine with it.

Language is intentionally ambiguous and specific so that it maximizes the amount of potential comprehension from a wide number of individuals and then exchanges particulars.

If this was a submitted term paper, ok, check that grammar. Forums... meh.
Many of us use quick-auto correct, type late at night, and are just semi-lazy.

That's the sort of thing you'd want to have the guy read out loud, a few days after they typed it, to see if they could manage.

Sad thing is, they'd probably manage.

Some people have too much time on their hands. Worrying about proper English usage by anonymous people on non academic/profession forums is pretty silly.

The only thing I can't stand is the 1000 word post with no caps, spaces, or punctuation. Edit. Just like the in the above post lol.

My all-time favorite scene from the show. I referenced it once before here and nobody caught on.
