Rant about shopping carts

Somebody needs to design and market a collapsible, personal shopping cart. That way there's only my own filth on the cart, and the cart goes into the trunk when I'm finished shopping. Best idea ever!

Guess it was three years ago, I was setting in Blazer while wife ran in Walmart for a quick item. Kid (probably 16) bumped a cart into vehicle's side to leave it there instead of putting in corral. I stepped out looked him in the eye and asked if he was that (F)orbiden (U)nlawful (C)arnal (K)nowledge ing lazy or did his parents just not teach him properly. Couldn't have caught him if I'd tried.

I think that in this way haveing grown up the first 20 years of my life in direct contact with the Army made me a bigot when it comes to Lazy people! I also do not like it when people do not think abouthow their actions affect everyone else in their comunity!

If you have a means of carrying more stuff, you have a means of spending more money in the store. Believe me, there is something in it for them too.

THe only store in my area that is neat and tidy in reguards to carts is Aldi's!Aldi's does not pay anyone to collect carts and they only have one central cart location. The difference is that they have a pay/deposit device onthe cart that requires a quarter. You either put a quarter in the cart or you do not get a cart! SO of course everyone returns their cart and collects their quarter. I first saw this type of system in Germany as a young man. It makes plenty of sense!

The deposit a quarter system was for a while on trial at our local Safeway. After a few months the system was removed and the carts got an electronic theft device installed that will block a wheel as soon as the cart get too far from the parking lot.

The deposit system (chain lock on cart handle) has been used in Germany since the early '80s. Most people do however not use a coin, but a plastic chip or fob that they keep attached to their keychain, so that they always have it when they need it.

I know a Chinese market here in SF that uses this system. However their carts are so dirty I wouldn't want to use one anyway. If I take one of their baskets, I line it with a bunch of produce bags for protection.

Carts and baskets are generally filthy. The carts are often stored outside and seagulls and pigeons take aim at them. The baskets are stacked, thus the filthy bottom of one basket touches the interior of the basket under it. Gross. I'm certain the average shopping cart or basket is as contaminated as a public restroom.

Most places here use the coin return system, either with quarters or dollar coins. I think I've seen one system using two dollar coins, and saw a lot of people with baskets.

I have to rant against Canadian Tire for their lack of parking lot corrals. The cart collection is inside the entrance turnstile thing, so if I wanted to return the cart I'd have to walk across half the store to the registers, then push past a bunch of people to get out again. Usually I just start my own corral in between the entrance and exit doors with mine and any other stray carts I can pick up on the way.

I've seen a guy forget that the chains were off his low-hanging mud flaps and he ripped the mud flap and fender flare off the fender, with a little fender distortion too. I was in the passenger seat at the time.
