1st ? why do most GM (Chevrolet) owner use Pennzoil? all my friends/ relatives that are GM fans use it .

2nd my father uses shell oil (Rotella diesel)10w40, in his ford trucks all the time, is this safe for gasoline engines? aka my ford 300 inline 6?

or should I use Trop/Artic 10w30? ( dads friend uses that and I have seen the insides of the engines that both oils, were used in and they are clean and not very worn

1st question. Personal preference
2nd question. Many diesel oils carry an API gasoline spec such as SM or SN rotella being one of them grade dependent.
3rd question. Use whatever you like in your application. Today's oils are very good and when changed as per manufacturers maintenance minders should keep your engine clean.

1st- What are you driving...year, make/model, engine etc.?

2nd- all 3 oils that you mentioned are held in high regard here at BITOG.

3rd- IDKY GM owners us Pennzoil but, they're certainly doing themselves a good deed as Pennziol 5W30 is one of the best and GM engines mostly require 5W30.

4th- Yes, it's very OK that your dad used Rotella 10W40 in his truck as Diesel Engine Oils have a very good additive package and very desired in gasoline engines such as your dad's truck.

5th- Trop Artic 10W30 is a very good oil but you don't necessarily need to use it, as there are plenty of excellent oils available and there may be an oil that's a better fit for your application...Why 10W30?

my truck is a 1985 ford f-150 (gas)300 inline 6 np435 manual trans

Im changing fluids in my truck and have used Shell Rotella T before, and don't like the new oils (catalytic safe oil) even rotella is slowly going that way

Is diesel oils better in this engine?

delo
rotella
velo
ect.

oh and 10w30 ,5w30,10w40 ect doesn't matter I just want to stick with a brand that's

good
easy to find
relatively cheap
catalytic harming lol ( high in zinc phos.,calcium, ect.

Yesterday's oils were no great wonder with respect to zinc and phosphorous content, either. Just because there were no limits on phosphorous content many years ago doesn't mean they just poured the ZDDP in. In a low valve spring pressure 300, don't worry too much. Use QS Defy, Rotella, or any regular PCMO for that matter.

80,000miles on the odometer

I usually change it every 3000miles ( usually use my truck for heavy loads )but now starting to change it every 5000
the oil stays clean for a 1985 carbureted motor

could I possibly use a lower weight ( 5w30 ,10w30, 5w20,0w20)

like motorcraft (fords line of oils )
which one would be best of that brand?

I thought that you wanted high additive levels...20s and 30s are controlled to lower levels than 40s.

There's nothing wrong with using a 10w-30 or 5w30 in there, but I'd not be experimenting with 0w-20 or 5w-20 in there. I prefer to stick to 5w30 in mine. There's 10w-30 in it now due to a sale. Before the rebuild, when it was leaking, it got a lot of 15w40. I also used MaxLife 5w30 in there with good success.

If it were me, I'd go with MaxLife or Defy in 5w30. I have a couple jugs of Defy waiting to go in yet.
