Randall Cobb EV Car Fire.

Considering how many more ICE vehicles there are vs. EVs, that would be a safe bet. When they're equal world wide the topic would be worth revisiting, and the stats might change. For now the jury is out. Having said that ask a fireman who has put out ICE fires and and EV fires which is worse, I did and the answer came as no surprise.
You won’t find many firemen who put out EV fires as it’s anywhere from 4x-8x less likely to catch fire vs ICE as a % with current stats.

My nephew, employed by the NYFD recently put one out, and was also at a fire where a person died as a result of an electric moped catching fire while charging. I believe it took out an apartment, it made the news here. Bottom line as it stands the EV fires are a lot worse, and harder to extinguish, but that's old news now. One thing for sure as the % of them grows we'll be hearing more about it.

And when you see an EV fire, don't watch it, get the heck away from that thing ASAP as Cobalt fumes that are not present in ICE vehicles and are in EV's can cripple you for life. Not saying ICE fumes are ok, but not as bad to an EV. My daughter works in a large mall and I said if you come upon a car fire in the parking ramp assume it is an EV and don't figure the smoke is not that bad and go to your car. Go back in and go to the other side of the mall for an couple of hours or call an Uber and come back later when they finally get the "run away" process under control. She knows it's not going to be a 5 minute hose down like a ICE car.

Great point often overlooked and defended, especially by the EV proponents.

Not to mention, the increase risk of collapse of parking ramps/ reduction of vehicle counts might have to be reinforced to reduce loading in older ramps that did not take in account for increase 70% large SUV/trucks percentage and then add EV and EV trucks.

With respect to structural engineering they design for worst case not the average and then apply a 2-4x safety factor on top.

Dated specs reflect the newer weights fine.

The danger of parking ramps is putting dumpsters in them or crowding by people (watching fireworks for example). A parking spot full of people puts a larger load then a heavy EV.

The topic selling vehicle in the WORLD for 2023 was Tesla Model Y at 1.1 M. Plenty out there yet world is not burning ….

Tens of millions more ICE vehicles out there, and the world isn't burning from them either. But they don't burn as hot or toxic, and are a lot easier to extinguish if they do burn.

No, but nearly every EV fire is national news which makes it look bigger than it is. Yes, it’s still a problem and it’s harder to fight, but rest assured we don’t miss hearing about it when it happens. I’ve seen ICE fires in person that don’t make national news and I’ve never seen an EV fire in person.

That’s not to say one is so much more prevalent than the other, it says a lot about the news cycle and what gets ratings though.

The fact still remains, there are a lot more ICE vehicles than EV's, EV fires are worse, more toxic, and harder to extinguish. Regarding the news, like all news it depends on where you source the news. My comments were based on facts. Maybe one day EV fires won't be as bad, will be less toxic, and easier to extinguish than ICE fires, time will tell.

Yes and more ICE burn by percentage than EVs, which is why the news is an interesting deal. I don’t watch the news, but that info sure makes it in the circles in forums.

Part of that is the fact that they’re harder to fight. It makes the news even when there isn’t other damage to property like that’s even news. There’s a lot of axes to grind over EVs apparently.

Need to have some way to deter that. I think a 240V constant voltage being on the wire to shock a potential thief would be a good start. They haven't been stupid enough to cut high voltage powerline yet so anything that can shock the thief for a week but not enough to kill them would deter them.
They are not copper.
