Race engine Oil consumption/smoke problem SOLVED!

As many of you have read my previous posts of my motor smoking underdecceleration, i have finally solved the problem. My motor was consuming up to 3 litres of oil in less than a week and a half.

i tried Mobil 1 5w50 twice and in under 2 weeks on both changes 3 lires were missing from the pan. redline 5w30 did the same, and so has RP 15w40.

My motor was smoking under decceleration especially when spun up to 8000 rpm (388ci LT4 corvette) and the throttle was shut. I thought it was the oil. I swiched to redline 5w30 from mobil just to see if I could free up some hp and that's when i noticed the smoke.

1. my clearances are tighter than stock so the motor didn't require a thicker oil.

2. the rings are fine as there was no smoke under accelereation.


The problem? The PCV !!!!! We pulled the pcv tube off the throttle body the other day and oil just poured out from within it. I went for a drive on the highway and went WOT from 2-4th gear and let it deccelerate from 275 km/hr in 4th and slowed to a stop. I pulled the pcv tube from the throttle body and to my amazement it seemed like the entire tube was full of oil and it spilled all over my motor.

Under deccel with the throttle shut the pcv was sucking all the oil out of my valve cover and coating the inside of my intake manifold. Since then i've put on a breather and plugged the throttle body and my motor hasn't consumed any oil. it also doesn't smoke under deccel anymore.

I wouldn't remove the PCV system altogether, just put a restriction on the PCV line.

Also, isn't there a PCV valve in there? Where is it?
 
i change my oil every week or two i could care less about oil degradation. Its not creating much blowby at all. In fact full throttle on a dyno there isn't a wisp of smoke coming out of the pipes until the throttle is shut. i can only imagine how much suction there is ina 6.4L motor at 7900 rpm when the throttle blades are closed. The only place it was able to draw air in through was the pcv pipe, and it was vaccuming in all the oil in the passenger side head.
 
Is the pcv valve connected to the end of the valve cover closest to the front bumper, by any chance? Maybe the oil is pooling, and it all sloshes forward as you slow down. How's the oil drainage in there?

p.s. 275 km/h???
 
well it does degrade because with a pcv all the gases escaping past the rings in the crankcase are sucked into the manifold. without a pcv they stay there and contaminate the oil.

I can see your logic but the pcv on my valve cover is on top of the cover, with a tube going to the throttle body. The second pcv I believe is connecting the intake vally area to the manifold. this doesn't have any oil in it because the oil is further below. Guess I still have a small amount of pcv.

275 km/hr is redline in 4th. Have seen 327 so far

An interesting side note on this - BMW avoids this sort of thing by using a device referred to as an oil separator instead of a PCV valve. I say this because I visit a BMW parts web site that features exploded views and I have never seen a PCV valve mentioned. Their engines turn a lot of RPMs so maybe they've figured something out. This is why troubleshooting engine problems from afar, let alone making lubrication recommendations, is difficult and imprecise, given the lack of, or incorrect information provided. Most would assume that a professionaly built engine had the PCV system sorted out beforehand.
 
Let me just add, to solve this problem correctly, I recommend you study up on the theory and practice of PCV systems.
 
I have run my motor with no pcv just open to atmosphere and my oil turned black within 1500 miles (RL). Use the pcv on a daily driver but not needed on a car thats at the track. There is to much blow buy and the stock pcv may not be able to keep up and blow the gakets out.
 
more blowby into crankcase with loose forged pistons and race gapped rings==higher crankcase pressure==more oil vapor and mist blown and sucked out of PCV valve especially in manual transmission apps with high rpm spool done and engine braking

not uncommon for a NASCAR engine to burn 5 qts in 500 miles
