I wanted to give a quick overview of my first 500 miles with my Ecosport. These things have a bad rap with the "professional" reviewers but I don't think they really speak for us normal folk.

First off its a 2021 Ford Ecosport AWD. This means it can only have the 2.0 DI, N/A motor from the focus. 163hp i believe. It's and SE trim with an appearance package that adds some nice looking interior bits, along with optional 17" rims that I think really set off the look over the normal 16's. And finally it has the convenience package which adds some speakers and a few other things.

Driving: It's not fast, no one would expect it to be. It's got 160ish hp and weighs 3300lbs. It really doesn't feel slow, my best description would be that it feels heavy. Handling feels good, no crazy body roll. Maybe a little stiff over bumps with the 17" wheels. Brakes feel great. 4 wheel discs with the fronts being pretty decently sized. Overall it feels solid on the road. The little bits of snow we've had I've felt very confident driving it.

Fit and finish: Did a detail quick before it snowed here and the paint finish is pretty good, no major defects that I saw. A little swirled from what I assume was the dealer running it through a touch wash. Interior feels pretty quality for the price point. BUT there are a few rattles that need to be addressed or they may drive me crazy. Unfortunately this has been what I've experienced from all my affordable new car purchases lately.

Practicality: MPG's are not great as the reviews state. I do short trips and with winter on us now I expect to get about 23 in town. I got 26.4 on a fill-up where it was warmer and I was doing some break in cruising and I'm fine with that. Interior is bigger than you'd expect when looking from the outside.

Overall as a person who's only ever owner efficient commuter cars I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoy this. I have always (and maybe still do?) hated SUV's and the big push from consumers to buy them. But I may be coming around a bit on that one.

Unfortunately (I think) they are desperately ugly- the proportions are totally wrong, too tall and short, so they look super top heavy. This thing is supposed to compete with the HRV, Taos and Crosstrek and I just don't understand what Ford was thinking with the styling. They drive just fine and are practical, but god the styling. Glad they dropped the powershi(f)t though, that is one of the most diabolical transmissions ever created.

Yes I didn't buy it for it's stellar good looks. But I will say the proportions are better in person than I've seen in most pictures.

Is this a Chinese made vehicle?
The MPGs are poor for what it is. You could drive a minivan and get that. So much for “eco”.

A Big Mercedes or minivan will stuggle to hit 18 mpg in my driving environment. The mpgs aren’t great to be sure but there is clearly a lack of understanding of factors that effect efficiency both in design of the vehicle and environment and use case going on here.

No doubt. If you do a lot of stop and go, traffic, etc., it will make its mark. My wife definitely sees this with her van.

But in those poor commuting scenarios, a hybrid would be a better choice too…. My point was that a van is much larger and can return similar numbers, so “eco” isn’t really the case here…

But in reality a minivan would see 5-6 mpg drop at least in my case. Which as a percent is nothing to sluff off. Plus the ease of parking, awd and lower cost. Not saying one is better than the other but they aren’t really comparable.

A hybrid would be excellent. But then you’re talking about stepping up to an escape and paying an extra $8k. With the amount I drive it would never pay off. Everything has a trade off.

Doesn't ARCOgraphite have a Ecosport ? he is the man you want to talk to ..

And getting 26 mpg on a benz like that at 80 mph is tough to swallow.

That 2.0 is 10 years old now with minimal updates, not surprising it gets less than the Focus did with a taller, and shorter body honestly. Reliable engine, but dated.

I don’t see many of them in rental fleets - Hertz, once a big Ford cheerleader is all in on the Chevy Trax/Equinox and the Hyundai Venue/Tucson last time I found myself at the counter.
