Questions regarding my GT-Four.

Hi there.

I'm a first time poster, and hope that you can give me some advise, and maybe help me understand this a little better.

I have a 1995 Toyota Celica GT-Four, and wanted to ask for your opinion regarding motor oil.
The engine is a 2 liter, turbocharged and stock for now.
The 3sgte motor has a water cooled turbo.
Dry fill is 5.2 liters and drain and fill with new filter is 4.5 liters.
It has 157þ km on the odo but has 57þ km (c.a. 35þ miles) on a rebuilt engine.

What would you recommend to me, and take into account that winter is coming, and because of the size (or lack there of) of the place I live in, there is more of stop and go traffic than highway driving.

There is not much I can choose from. Shell, Esso, Mobil 1 and limitied range of Havoline and Castrol, as far as I know.

I have been thinking a lot about Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40. The car is usually not driven very hard, but I might want to take it to the track sometime.

Before I started reading about and researching motor oils I never knew, or maybe I should say, never thought a lot about how much difference the oils can have on your engine. But I'm willing to learn and will research this more.

My uninformed suggestion is Mobil 1 0W-40.

First off

. Don't you have some fairly active volcanic action going on frequently? What kind of temps do you experience in the winter, is it below 0*C often? The Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 sounds like a good oil for your Celica. I believe it's from Shell's most excellent Group III base. Unless you get into really serious sub zero temps you should be fine. Your turbo will appreciate the 40wt. I'm sure others will chime in soon.

The thing is, I'm having trouble finding what the manufacture recommends. I have found:

The Toyota recommendation is for a 10W50 multi grade. The important thing is that any turbo car should be using 100% synthetic oil to handle the extra heat generated by turbo applications.

Also found that I should use API Grade SF.

And somewhere I read 5w30 below 0f, and 10w30 above 0f if I recall correctly, so If someone knows what is recommended, I appreciate that.

And yes, there is some active volcanic action that goes on

But the temps are usually below 0° during the winter, and it gets pretty cold, and annoying .

I think the Helix Ultra sounds good too.

If more people want to chime in, I'm all ears.

Never seen Delvac , but haven't looked everywhere. Same with Rotella, and I have not yet been able to find Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.

There seems to be a rather limited range of products here, and I'm not too happy about that....

The Helix Ultra is likely close to Rotella T Syn if in the 5w40 wt and it or any Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w40 would be my ameture suggestion. You may even have access to Mobil 1 5w50 there and that should cover all the bases from what you have give us so far.

Any of the above-mentioned oils would be fine, but if your car is specced for 10w50, then I would personally use Mobil 1 15w50 in the summer and any quality synthetic 5w40 in the winter if it gets cold. If it gets VERY cold, then use any of the "european formula" ACEA A3/B3 0w40 oils (i.e. Mobil 1 0w40, Castrol Edge 0w40, etc.)

Hi there. Just wanted to update.
Apologies for the long post

I was finally able to get on my feet and go see if I could service the car. I had surgery 3 weeks ago and I hate not being able to do anything

Anyway. I went searching for oil, Shell Helix Ultra 5w40. For some unexplained reason the first places I went to didn't have it in stock, or any oil at all. What's up with that ? Finally I found it. 4 liter container, probably around a gallon, for 63.75 dollars

Maybe it's just me, but I think that's A LOT.
I asked about the price and they said that's the right price. Then I saw the 1 liter container for 14 bucks.
Wait a minute. 14*4 is 56 bucks ??? How is that possible. I asked why it was cheaper to buy the 1 liter container, and they said that can't be. I said yes it is. They checked the computer and then wanted to charge me extra for the 1 liter containers ??? I took the 2 bottles from the shelf and told him to go back and get 3 more. I paid 70 for the five bottles and walked out.
I think it's **** that the 4 liter container is more expensive than to buy 4, 1 liter containers... That's just *****.
Anyway, Enough of the rambling.
I went to my place of work and checked the dip stick before I began. There was a noticeable drop since the last time I checked, and I didn't like that.
I lift the car up, drain the oil, remove the filter and have a look around. I notice a oil leak that seem to be coming from between the timing belt cover and block. I checked all the bolts and there was one that was very loose ? Strange. I tightened it, replaced the filter, cleaned everything and will check again to see if it still leaks and where it's coming from, but I hope all I needed to do was tighten the bolt.
Put the oil on the engine, took a drive and checked the oil again, and everything was good.

I want to thank you for the advise and knowledge you have shared with me. I'm sure the car is happy with the new oil

I took a couple of pictures on the way home (came out horrible and tried to fix it in PS, and I'm not good at that either) and wanted to share it with you.

The color is Candy Red and is absolutely beautiful in the sun.

I was about the snap that photo, and my brother (8 year old) yells NO NO NO NO. I ask him what ?.. He runs to the car, opens the door and turns the wheel to the left. He then looked at me and said. The rim is supposed to face you !!! Haha,, he was so serious

He's cool.

Maybe you noticed the fish in the background. Being dried.

Anyway, the car is now in the garage waiting for me to come and take it for a ride. It was pretty hard changing he oil, so I'll give it a little more time... Can't wait.
