We took the wife's Galant in for a clunk in the front end. While it was there the dealership decided to change the oil unbeknown to us. I have been using PU since we purchased the car. They put in conventional oil. So the question is, should I let it run it's course or switch it back to PU right away? I have heard horror stories of this ruining an engine.

It won't hurt anything, but,,,,,,,if you didn't ask for an oil change I'd make them put PU back in the car. A fresh fill at their expense, and watch them pour it in from new bottles.
What if you had an even more expensive boutique oil in your car that you just put in a hundred miles ago and they did the same thing, would you be happy about it and let it go? As it is PU isn't cheap, and the shop shouldn't take the liberty of doing unauthorized work. Maybe the hit to the wallet will teach them. Just be sure to watch them do the work, or ask for money and DIY, which is even better come to think of it.

The Galant will be fine for a standard OCI. The biggest question is are you OK with them dumping your Pennzoil Ultimate for bulk mineral oil?

Honestly any garage who does anything on your car without asking first is definitely a place i would not return to. If you didnt ask for one they should of left well

Uhoh ... I've gone Synblend -> Full Synthetic > Synblend -> Full Synthetic -> Conventional on my Focus ... that's not good.

Meh, no big deal, but I would certainly ask the dealership why they changed the oil without your permission.

Wow, what a waste of PU Holy Grail Oil.
I'd be really mad too.
That stuff is impossible to get on sale, I'd make them put in fresh PU.
The service advisor would have to cost it on the paper, with 0$ on the client total, but it would be nice to see almost 60$ for a jug of PU appear as the shop's loss.

The OP didn't mention if he was charged for the oil change or if the car was due for an OC.
Over the years I've had lots of free stuff done by dealers, including car washes, multi-point inspections (yes I know they are looking for work but I don't mind), tire rotations and air pressure checks, etc.
So I'd like a little more info before coming down too hard on the shop.

I really wouldn't worry about the oil and would certainly leave it in.

A Toyota stealer "customer service" hack once noted on my service order (for a RECALL notice) that the oil in one of my Camrys (still under warranty) was "dirty and low" when I had changed it the week prior to Mobil 1. It wasn't, of course, just an attempt to up the commission the hack service writer was going to get by doing more service. I told the manager I didn't appreciate the record of care on my still under warranty car being trashed by a hack just looking for a bigger commission. I got another writeup with THAT "fact" omitted.

Thanks for all the advice folks.I know the owner of the of the Mitsubishi dealership I took the car to very well. I will ask them to either put PU back into it or reimburse me. As for the horror stories, I talked with my neighbor last night and he told me a story of his in-laws Contour having had synthetic in it since new. They took it in for a $19.99 oil change special ( they were told it would be conventional oil installed), two months later the engine blew, coincidence? That is why I asked the question. By the way, I just did the PU OC two months ago.
