Question to LS1, LS2, LS6 owners

The L33 in my 2006 Sierra is a LS6 derivative. I can find no mention of GM4718 in the Owner’s Manual. The manual says the engine requires the use of an oil meeting GM6094M. 5W30 is the only recommended viscosity and the manual cautions against the use of other viscosities.

I would have to say that in many Z28 Camero owners that have the LS-1 have never used an GM 4718 complant oil. And how many of them have over 100,000 miles on the road and run just fine.

Ok, dave, I'm not a spell geek, but I do own a "Camaro."

As a LS2 GTO owner, I believe that currently the LS2 powered vehicles are the only ones that are "supposed" to run oil that meets GM 4718. I currently run RP 5W30 in mine and unlike many other LS2 GTO owners, I do not have oil issues.

LS1, LS6, LS7 engines do not though considering that Mobil1 5W30 is the factory fill and does meet 4718M, I guess in a way they are saying that it does require it.

An LS6/7 owner could shed some more light.

I have an 03 Corvette. The reason I was told it requires "Special Oil" GM 4718M is beacuse the engine has no Oil Cooler. Normal Oil Temps are over 200F and agressive track driving, can get the oil close to 300F. The most I have seen in my car is 286F on a Road Course.

My 02 SS has a H/C package and makes 420rwhp. It was a late model Aug 02 production and came factory filled with Mobil 1. There is nowhere in the manual that called for 4178 though. I've ran it on many oils but have settled on Synthetic 5W-40's as they have given the best UOA's.

As dave1251 said there are thousands of LS1 TA's Z28's with 100K miles that are run on jiffy lube 10W-30 with no problems.

I have an 01 LS1 Trans Am and I have always used Redline 10W30 (not approved or meeting any requirements).I'll look in my owners manual later and see what it says.

Don't get confused with GM recommended and required. So often I get told by the new GTO and Vette owners Mobil1 "Full Synthetic" is required when in reality Mobil1 is recommended due the marketing agreement and has nothing to do with what the engine requires. Now for warranty purposes the onus is on the GM dealer/shop to prove you did not utilize a GM "approved oil" and that was directly linked to whatever warranty work you are requesting. Many oils that exceed parameters set forth in GM4718 are exceeded by oils that have not paid to go through the certification. However they are "better" oils than what GM is recommending or requiring.
So at the end of the day I use the best oils for my new cars ( Mercedes/Pontiac/Chevy) that are prove and all oils I use exceed the manufacturers recommended or certified oils. I just don't say anything to the dealer and they are clueless anyway. I don't believe anybody goes out and buys a new car with the desire to shorten its life or cause failures due inadequate or inferior lubrication products. Every person I know with a new car only wants the best and have every intention of driving the car/truck for a million miles

Bottom line is I do not get caught up on who has paid for the certification from GM and who hasn't and stay focused on VOA's and UOA's and of course engine builders experience to guide my choice of oils. Not some StarBurst or manufactures "approval"..

I ran my 2000 C5 Corvette for 5 years on Red Line 5w-30. No issues whatsoever except for a leaky upper oil pan gasket. Can't blame the oil on that one.
