Quick question - I bought a vehicle back in May that I now want to sell. I transferred the title when I bought it in May. I won't have the updated title for another 4-6 weeks from the state (I can't believe it takes them about 5 months to get it out).

I have someone who is interested in purchasing it. Is there a good way to complete the sale without the title? Seems impossible, but was wondering if some type of purchase contract would hold water.

Thanks.

I totally agree with you. I do have the paperwork from the state showing I transferred it, but that might not mean much. Looks like I might just have to wait.

Many states permit registering a can more than X years old with just a bill of sale. New car in a title state... you're stuck I think. You might want to call your DMV and ask. Bound to happen a lot.

wow, in PA you can have a title in hand just a week or two after filing the paperwork at the Notary (we don't have individual DMV's, all title work is done at independent notaries)
but to the OP's question, you'll have to wait to get the title in hand.

You could plausibly get a rush title, you must have some sort of receipt/ carbon copy of the application from applying for the original that could help you along.

In my state you can trade a car to a dealer without a title, you fill out the "duplicate title" form and the title goes straight to the dealer. In your instance though the clock would have to start ticking all over again!

Maine is lenient on titles BTW, 1994 and older don't need 'em. We can generate a registration that doubles as proof of ownership for out of state sales, which will then "birth" a new title with a break in history.

I have the copy/receipt. Not sure I can get a rush title. The DMV website says to allow 6 months for the title to be sent. Unbelievable.

The longer period is often associated with the need for a title which shows the bank making the original purchase loan has been paid. On a cash deal the process ought to be quicker. Selling a car which is financed requires the bank to sign off and, of course, they won't do that until paid. Normally, when you pay the car loan off the bank sends, or causes to be sent, the title document showing the loan paid.
