question on using mazda 0w20 w moly in 2007 mazda3

I have been using pennzoil ultra 5w30 since new, no problems. Car has 76k miles. Since the mazda 0w20 came out, I've been wondering if the mazda oil is better suited for the engine. Engine is 2.0 liter mzr with flat tappet and timing chain. The mazda oil has good amount of moly and boron, would that help in reducing cam and chain wear?

Here that exact engine requires an acea a5/b5 5w30. I use the synpower 5w30 FE on mine.

Isn't the MZR the same engine used in Ford Foci which recommends 5w20? I might use 0w20 in winter but I'd stick with 5w20 or 5w30 in summer. PU is excellent but so is Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State Ultimate Durability and they can be had much cheaper in the 5 qt. Jug at WM.

Using PetroCan 0W-20 (rebranded Mazda Canada dealer oil) in my 2010 2.0L M3 through winter and will switch to 5W-20 PP for summer running. So far, the 0W-20 works great with quite a few -25F starts this winter.
Planning on switching to 0W-20 TGMO for the fall oil change.

I don't know for sure, but there doesn't appear to have excessive cam noise. The mazda 0w20 is enticing because of the low statup viscosity and moly. Thanks for all the comments.

I have used Idemitsu 0W20 one Winter and really liked the easy starts in cold snaps.

With all the specials I ran into for 5W20 synthetics that I couldn't say no to, I won't be buying 0W20 anytime soon.

I may buy an OCI of 0W20 one last Winter before buying a new battery to stretch the use of the battery for one extra year.

0W20 in my car starts in cold snaps so easily it sounds like the engine was restarted from hot. No slow cranking. 0W20 is very easy on the battery as it uses a lot less Amps to turn over with the thin synthetic.

I highly recommend 0W20 for Winter use, in Summer it probably doesn't help anything much.

Yes. The car was made in Japan and exported to rest of world. Oil spec is 5w20 for US and Canada, 5w30 for rest of the world. I have been using 5w30 synthetic.

Off topic but related....My sister bought a new 2013 Mazda3 Skyactiv which calls for 0w20. She is running the FF until 5K.
Would it be detrimental to put 5w20 in it for the upcoming summer? I ask because I have some Pennzoil Ultra and Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 to use.

Using those oils won't do any harm as they are both very high quality products however I suggest reading the warranty wording carefully as well as the owners manual to see exactly what is says is acceptable if 0w-20 isn't available.

Doesn't ultra have moly and boron?

I read our 2013 Mazda 3 Skyactive manual this weekend. (yes i was bored, we were on a 7 hour drive!) The Skyactive engine is spec'ed for 0w-20 in the US and Canada, 5w-20 or 5w30 in Mexico and Europe. I agree you would do no harm running the 5w-20 but I would stick to 0w-20 for warranty sake.

I don't believe the oil choice or using the Mazda moly 0W-20 will make any significant difference to timing chain wear. As for camshaft lobe wear, perhaps if you're doing a lot of cold starts in the winter months it could make a slight difference in theory.

The Mazda moly 0W-20 with it's 221 VI is a particularly light oil and I don't think your car has been back spec'd for the 0W-20 grade. It is spec'd for the 5W-20 grade so I would recommend using that. I'd suggest PP or Havoline 5W-20 or even Mobil 1 0W-20 which is recommended for 5W-20 applications. These oils contain Moly and Boron but not at high concentrations.

What is appropriately funny is that the Mazda dealerships don't use the Mazda oil when they do the OCI's!

And many dealers don't even stock the Idemitsu made Mazda moly 0W-20, of course they will order it in for you if you give them the part number.
Unlike the similar TGMO 0W-20 I don't believe it's available in bulk to Mazda dealers so they have source their bulk oil from other suppliers such as Castrol.
