question on "universal" ATF that covers all specs

How is it possible? Some specs like Ford type F have no friction modification and most do have various degrees of friction modifications. How can one ATF cover Ford type F as well as all other specs?

It can't. Type F is for no other application. Just older Ford products. Some folks use it for racing fluid in Older GM transmission, better shifting for some reason. I would not recomend a universal fluid, espescialy for the newer cars.

I too had the same questions about Wolfs Head and considered it before I chose to go with Maxlife. To me the differences were that Valvoline offers some sort of warranty/guarantee on their product.

I've never seen a universal ATF that claims to be comptaible with Type F. They usually claim to cover just about every spec EXCEPT Type F. Nevertheless, I also have always been skeptical of universal fluids and also wonder how one can cover so many different specs. I use Maxlife in transmissions that only call for a basic Dex III/Mercon fluid, but any other "special" spec I will only use a manufacturer approved product.

Amsoil is good for many but not all. Near universal. Many of the specs overlap so that is how one ATF can cover many specs. But there are some oddballs. Even Amsoil has 3 I think.

What you do not want is Joe the mechanic adding a special potion to the plain ATF to make it perfect for your car.

Amalie makes Wolfs Head.They make a big deal how proud they are that they blend for other companies and they make their own bottles and labels.The same universal stuff is sold as Amalie brand and Parts Plus house label.They recently split off CVT fluid from the universal to a separate product.They must have got in trouble for using it in troublesome CVTs.

Valvoline/Ashland/MaxLife is over-rated pond scum.

I felt bad for the used oil that was in the recycling barrel when it came time to dump my pail that had some "good" MaxLife in it.

"Suitable For or May be used" doesn't mean it is tailored for your specific transmission or is the best option.

I was always confused by "All Makes all Models" ATF......but have noticed most all "all makes all models" fluids (RP, Amsoil, etc...) have a foot note that Ford Type F not included.....lol. Granted, didnt bother me, I don't use Type F

And has been a while since I went digging, stuff may have changed by now. Not to mention, Type F is always at all stock at my local Walmart......stuff don't sell....but they carry it since we do have a couple classics in our town that come and buy it every so often......then there's the few, that will buy it, and ruin a transmission, just because the Type F is cheaper

Use OEM transmission fluid that actually meets spec.
