Hi,
Know a lot about oil, less about oil filters! :) I have a 2007 Mazda3, converted to a spin on from the cartridge. Stock filter for the spin on is a Motorcraft FL 910. The ST application is a 3614. The ST is a bit shorter, but that doesnt bother me, as it is still a large filter for a 4 cylinder.

Question is, is the 3614 a decent filter for a 4k OCI? Is it an E-core?

Thanks
Brett

You can run 5k on a convention/semi syn OCI no problem even on that filter. The Motorcraft is really good if you can get them not too expensive.

Brett,

The SuperTechs are made by Champion Labs and are, by all accounts, a good value filter. The ST3614 is an e-core design and from ones I've cut open from our sludge-prone Camry, your Mazda will do just fine on these.

If you have the room, check out the ST3600, it's a slightly longer version of the ST3614 that retains the stock filter diameter.

Integra..thanks. I was wondering what the oversized filter was. I may pop for one of those!

You're welcome and very lucky there are a ton of options for your application.

There's even the ST8A, but it's ridiculously, almost comically, oversized for a Mazda3 engine bay.

If you have more diameter but less length the ST16a will also fit. It's a short 8a.

The 3600 (long 3614) is a common ford app (mc fl400s) so the fact your conversion kit does not call for it would suggest some sort of interference, to me. I don't know of any/many fords that take the 3614... though the 3/4x16 thread is common for them.

My contour zetec 2.0 I4 took the st16 size, I was suprised.

Here's one of Bill's charts, from another thread regarding filters of this type:

A very common filter size; that thread referenced above is actually about filter requirements for Briggs/Stratton engines on garden tractors.

3600 would be plenty big, and the mc choice of a fl400s is a good option too.

no interference. The conversion kit comes right from the 2.0L version of the motor, so the standard filter is a MC 910/st3614.

Going bigger is an option, though probably not needed in my case. If I did a ST3600 or FL400s would be MORE than enough.

This is BITOG. EXTREME FULL CONTACT LUBRICATION. No filter is too big ..no sump too big ..no OCI too long or too short.

It's all good,yo. Muchmobettah..
