Well when you are changing the oil, pull the drain plug and let about a Quart run out and then fill the bottle. Its best to have the oil warmed up (take the vehicle for a 20 min run before changing). I would imagine the same would go if you are using a bypass setup, let the oil get warmed and circulated and pull out a sample.

That's what I do. Only problem: you have to put a quart of fresh oil in to make up for the loss. Then if the UOA comes back saying change it, you wasted a quart (or I suppose that freshened it up enough for another 500 or so miles?).

Paul,

Drain it into a pristine container (or one that you've cleaned - I use "brake clean" and paper shop towel) ...then dump the excess back in the engine

Yep, but there is something psychologically unsettling about pouring black looking oil back into the engine. Guess I just have to close my eyes.

I've done that before when I took a sample of my oil via my Sure Drain plug, but then wanted to continue running the oil longer.

It's very weird pouring hot black oil back into the engine, especially since it's so super thin.

I simply used an empty oil bottle (of the same type of oil) to catch that oil that I poured back into the engine.
