Since I was going to spend about $70-$90 on a rear bag kit and high lift blade for my old lawn boy, my wife agreed to let me try and find something used with a bag and self propulsion for the same money or a little more. Anyways, I found a lawn boy m series a couple hours away from me and it looks in good shape other than the usual scuffing on the sides of the deck. He wants $90 or best offer. Its missing the air filter and housing. Provided it wasn't used with out the filter on it, I don't think its a bad deal. I didn't even know the m series existed until I started looking for a used mower. as I understand it, these actually used an oil injected Suzuki engine? I assume its a quality engine, but do they ever have problems with the oil injection. also looking at an old snapper hi vac with an aluminum deck on Ebay that goes off tonight, so I've gotta decide soon.

Personally I would not buy something that did not have the air filter attached. Plus driving 2 hours is going to negate much of the savings of buying used. Keep looking on craigslist. Your grass doesn't need to be mowed yet anyways
The M-Series Lawnboy is an excellent mower. It does NOT have a Suzuki engine, the engine was manufactured by Lawnboy. Yes, it has oil injection and the system has been reliable, but some owners were disabling the oil injection and running the mowers with a 50:1 gas/oil mix because they didn't trust the system. During the first few mowings I would run it with mix AND oil in the tank to make sure that the system is still functional.
I would be VERY leary about the possibility that it was run without an air filter, without pulling the engine apart to see if it has dirt in it, there isn't any real way to tell if it has. The engines are very stout and they are rebuildable but I wouldn't pay $90 for the mower with this question in my mind. At the very least, you will have to obtain/buy an air filter assembly and air filter for it before you use it. See if they will take less for the mower, otherwise pass.

I would just rebuild yours. Easier and you know how it has been maintained.
That was kinda my thought too. I just gave it some thought cause I love lawn boys and I've never seen any m series around here. I have my dads old 8157 too, but it needs restored and with a new born in the house, I don't have the time to tackle that one yet

It was free and has served me ok the past couple years though. Its starting to use oil too. It had about a table spoon of oil in it when I got it

Those motors love 20-50. I put 20 years on a Craftsman with one.
The one i'm usingnow is a cheap silver series with the [censored] Tecumseh engine. The deck isn't in the best of shape and the wheels are about shot, so I don't really wanna sink any money into that. well, no worries guys, I wound up buying an old snapper hi vac with the aluminum deck and 3.5hp Briggs and Straton. Got it for $40, guess it was a good deal. It'll be nice to have an old "beater" to play around with Searched for those M series on youtube last night though, man do they sound neat, like a mini snow mobile
