Question about wax application

This is a total Nobie question. I typically use the small foam applicator disks to apply wax by hand. These disks are covered with a microfiber case. Prior to applying wax, I wet the applicator disk with water and wring it out until it is barely damp. I then apply the wax, periodically wetting the applicator pad again if it becomes too dry. This approach seems to help the applicator pad slide smoothly, which I feel is a good thing.

Should I wet the applicator pad with water at all? Do some of you just use straight wax and no water on the applicator pad? Thanks in advance for your help with this.

I am not expert, but I have always soaked the foam applicator in water and then vigorously wrung it out so it is very slightly damp, just as you do. I read somewhere that this is a good practice.

Anyone else?

I've done it that way for years, works fine. Thin coats are always the best way to go.

I know some spray a little detailer on the pad instead of water.

I always dampen my applicator with something prior to application. I use Zaino so I give the app a couple shots of Z6 but a little water works fine too, regardless of what product you use.

As has been mentioned, thin coats are the goal here and a slightly damp app makes that task easier.

I think the water makes it easier by perhaps functioning as a carrying agent or surfactant slightly for the wax. (if this makes sense) I know that I can spread the wax thinner with a wet one vs. a dry one.
