my question is that where does castrol syntec blend 10w30 ranks .is it a thick 10w30 or a light 10w30 compared to say pennzoil, regular castrol, motorcraft, valvoline (10w30)im asking this cause thats the grade of oil im usung in my f150 4.6 and since it calls for 5w20\5w30 i want a light 10w30(i will use 5w30 during the winter)

Why? Why? Why? The book says to use 5w20 or 5w30. It does not say a thin 30W or a thick 30W it says 30W. It also says 5W - not thin 10W not thick 0W, it says 5W. Maybe 5W30 is too easy?

I will never understand!

Jeeze, the guy just wants a question answered! I know it can be very hard finding Castrol product specs, hopefully someone can help out here.

Since your running it in the winter, the cold spec [5] is what is most important.
I wouldn't think twice about either oil weight - you'll be just fine.

Castrol's data sheets are not readily available on the net, you have to request them from castrol and they will send/e-mail them to you. If you want to run a good 5w20 in the winter, Motorcraft looks like a winner and has a -49 F pour point.

I'll double check when I get to work, but IIRC, the 10w30 version of Syntec blend was on the thicker side of the 30wt range, somewhere around 11.5 to 11.9 cst at 100c, while the 5w30 Syntec Blend was thinner, somewhere in the 10.5 to 10.9 range.

The Syntec Blend 10w30 certainly has "healthy" viscosity data compared to other major brands. I think the 1 or 2 reports on the UOA board list test data of drained oil above 63 SUS(10.5 cSt)!

Back to the original question, Pennzoil 10w30 is a good example of a lite 10w30. It is 67 cSt @ 40C and 10.5 cSt @ 100C on the Pennzoil product data sheet.

The 67 cSt @ 40C indicates the viscosity curve is starting a drop, compared to Motorcraft, Chevron/Havoline & TropArtic, which are up at 72 to 73 cSt.

And used oil analysis indicate that Pennzoil 10w30 shears down similar to some 5w30's. Some recent reports with Chevron 5w30 as a comparison:
code:

Pennzoil 10w30 Chev Sup 5w30

55.7 SUS 55.1 SUS

57.3 SUS 56.2 SUS

55.7 SUS 56.7 SUS

Yep, also ...

10W30 is 79 @ 40C
5w30 is 64 @ 40C

I think the 5w30 as recommended is fine for the Ford. It's gonna get up there faster at startup. Ain't this a good thing?? I think so.

Thanks Haley10, off topic, maybe not, I just bought my first diesel last cold January, that got me researching diesel oils, I have driven gas engines 25 years prior.

My finding with Esso is that CI-4/SL diesel/gas oils have better flow rates, better heat viscosity, and better TBN (30%more) than their Sl/gas oils.

I used to buy 5-30 Esso SL Superflo synthetic oil for $6.00 per litre, I now buy XD3 0-30 syn for 3.71 litre diesel/gas with better specs all around, even better than a 5-30.

Here is the clincher, conventional 5w30 XD3 CI-4/SL oil $2.50 litre versus SYNTHETIC Superflo SL/Gas oil $6.00 litre:

Superflo SYTHETIC 5-30/// XD3 DINO

TBN 8.6/// 12.2
PourPoint -39/// -36
100C viscosity 10.4/// 11
40C viscosity 58.2/// 65

This comparison is a DINO CI-4 5-30 versus a full synthetic 5-30 product. I paid $6.00 per litre for that Superflo for years, I could have paid $2.50 litre for Dino CI-4/SL and had same protection because I do 5K kms OCI. Now the XD3 syn CI-4/Sl 0-30 at $2.00 litre less blows $6.00 litre 5w30 synthetic superflo right out of the water.

My point being, it seems in Esso that any diesel/gas oil in syn or dino kicks --- on ony SL/gas Esso product syn or dino product. Possibly All oil companies CI-4/SL oil IS this much better than their respective SL products for winter oil flow properties, heat viscostiy and TBN protection???

Those who use their favorite oil may want to check out their oil companies's CI-4/SL rated oils for this winter cold driving conditions, may find better oil with better flow, heat viscosity and more Additives than the traditional SL/gas oil, the Sl oil probably costs more with less flow.

I cant feel anything but ripped off in buying SL/gas oils at 30% to 50% more than diesel/gas oils which have more protection and value for winter starts and summer viscosity protection.

How do other brands in CI-4/Sl do against their SL/gas oil for winter start performance, heat viscosity and TBN. If this should be a new topic then someone can go ahead and start one, sorry if I am too far off topic here, I believe most oil companies CI-4/SL oil is probably a better cold starter than their respective Sl/gas oils, anyone done their homework on other oil companies diesel vs gas oils for winter start properties?

I got spec #'s from castrol in the mail last year,
I have a word document of the spec #'s of most oils, pm or email me and I can send you it if interested.

Thanks 1 FMF, interesting comparing the oils, very close, the 5-30 and 10-30 syntec match the Esso Superflo close. The Castrol High Mileage numbers are close to XD3 Conventional comparisons, the Castrol heavy oils in 30 & 40 are comparable to XD3 Conventional oil too, hard to reference the heavy 20-50 Castrol syn oils though to the XD3 syn oils, the XD3 heavy syn oils only go to 0-40 and 0-30. The High Mileage Castrol rivals the Castrol syn blend, looks like good oil, as I said H.M. Castrol is close to XD3 conventional. I found it hard to tell if SL oils are any less quality than the CI-4/SL oils in Castrol. In general, do you find the diesel oils have better additives in other oils and Castrol at lower prices than SL as does Esso 1 FMF?

thanks again,

I agree, on the Ford modulars, I have never seen evidence that anything has worked better than the 0W-20, 5W-20, or 5w30 starburst oils. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I went through this ordeal with my 03 Altima which calls for a 5-30 oil all year round.

I find this Esso synthetic XD3 0-30 CH-I/SL diesel/gas oil to use in my Nissan. I was concerned that it may be too thin at the 0 weight, I then find out this oil is on thick side of 30 weight in these forums.

Concerned, I pulled out the specs on Superflo Esso synthetic 5-30 for comparison, Superflo is $2.00 more per litre, this is one of many 5-30 oils recommended by Nissan.

To my amazement, the XD3 0-30 has -9 C better pour point than Superflo, higher viscosity rating at 40C and 100C. And 30% more TBN for $2.00 less per litre!!!

Instead of thick 30 or thin 30 hearsay, you might want to check pour point and viscosity heat tests to see if any oil is right, compare these specs to other oils's specs which are so called thick or thin side for your decision. Way I see it, I dont care if this 0-30 XD3 is thick side of 30 weight, it kicks --- on the recommended 5-30 Superflo SL oil in both departments, this 0-30 XD3is a thick 30 weight oil but it has -48 pour point, this stuff will flow through my bearings cool or hot, I will sleep at night using it. My Nissan service manager on seeing the numbers told me the 0-30 is better than the 5-30 hot or cold and better additives.

Just my experience in this dilema on multigrade use with manufacturer specs, I did a bit of homework and got blessing from Nissan on it. Infact the salesman at Nissan after seeing my homework will now use 0-30 XD3 rather than 5-30 on his Maxima.

True CYPRS, I agree with all you said. That's what we're getting at... the better the cold flow properties the better or even at ambient. These Ford modulars probably don't benefeit from a higher HT/HS like the Nissan does.
