ive got a 2005 tacoma, 4.0 v6 and im coming up on an oil change. a friend of mine was able to get me 5 quarts of Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40, but toyota recommends using 5w30. im trying to choose the oil that would get the best in fuel mileage. my question is, should i just get the Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 or try out the suv & truck formula? and what are the differences between the 2? any advice is much appreciated. thanks

FWIW, the Mobil 1 5W-40 T&S data sheet says "Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is a 5W-40 viscosity grade product and is recommended by ExxonMobil where 5w30, 10w30 and 15w40 lubricants are specified." I didn't notice any gas mileage problem from running it in my 2.2L Accord.
I would run the Toyota on the 30wt. Not much experience with the 4.0 but the 3.4 is sensitive to viscosity changes on the fuel gauge. That and the fact that you have variable valve timing would keep me in the recomended viscosity.

I'd run a "thin" SAE 0w30 if you are interested in fuel efficiency.... I owned a '95 Tacoma for about eight years until I sold it to my nephew last spring. I experimented with different SAE grades of oil in this motor and the 0w30 provided the best combination of performance and fuel efficiency.
In this case, I would specifically recommend the Mobil 1, 0w30 over the Castrol 0w30 if fuel efficiency is your main goal. The M1 formulation is only about 7% thicker than the "cutoff" viscosity for an SAE 0w-20. So you can meet the letter of the law and maximize fuel efficiency at the same time.

0w-30 is starting to sound good to me as far as fuel efficiency goes- but ive got another question. im still under warranty with toyota and they recommend 5w30. would switching viscosities void my warranty? just a thought..
Technicaly 0w30 meets and exceeds the 5w30 requirements. My taco seems to really run well on this light 30 weight. I didn't chyoose the viscosity for fuel effeciency, I truley believe that Toyotas run best on viscosities in the low 10cst range @ 100°c
