Hello all, I need some advice. I'm picking up a 1987 Trans Am GTA w/ a 700R4 transmission. It is unknown how long ago or how often the transmission fluid has serviced.It has'nt been on the road for about a year. It does shift fine tho when I drove it. Would it be ok to replace the fluid with Amsoil ATF with out any negitive side effects? or should I keep Dexron in it?

Given unknown service history, I would drop the pan, clean it and replace the filter, then fill the pan with maybe Supertech Dexron, flush via cooling lines. Run for a few weeks and then flush via cooler lines with Amsoil.
A Magnefine filter would help also.
Any new fluid will loosen up crud in the transmission, and I feel its better to wipe as much as you can off the pan, exposing the magnets, also the filter could be 90% clogged and new fluid will clog it to 100%, you just do not know without looking.

I'm glad that you mentioned that, I did'nt know if that was a fact or myth.

I would let my replacement fill, the one that is going to stay in, be Maxlife ATF. Have heard some good stuff about it. I think a synthetic like Amsoil or Mobil 1 may cause a leak. Just a feeling I get.
