Obviously the separate brands are important to Shell marketing, but are the oils actually different than Pennzoil? Or are some of the them same as Pennzoil like is the case with the 4 brands of ConocoPhillips (Conoco, Phillips 66, Kendal, and "76")?

I doubt the name change had anything to do with formula changes. Anytime you hire marketing people they will come up with new names because they want to prove to their bosses they are doing something.

I'm a big fan of QS too, Bill. Honestly, as stupid as it sounds, my car ran VERY quiet on this oil. Amsoil SSO is a close second, but with the price of QS dino, it's a no brainer. 4k easy on this oil for me, with a MC filter. Cheap insurance and superb performance.

Mark888, I can assure you that Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Formula Shell are not the same product. They use different base stocks, and different additive packages, made by different additive suppliers.

So you can rest easy in that is one less thing you have to worry about. And I would also venture to say there were some (if ever so slight) changes to the Quaker State products.

I have 25 5quart jugs of the Qtorquepower & Q Horsepower that I have paid an average of $2.35 a quart for.

I hope they change the name to Q Applesauce in 2 more years when my stash gets low.

Jeebus, 25 jugs! Nice Score for $2.35 a quart!!!

It reminds me of the Delo SAE30 closeout in '05. I picked up 36 gallons of SAE30(and 15W40, 'cause the stores messed up!) for $.99 a piece.

Why would I worry about the oils being the same? I am sure some of them are the same even if some are different, and also suspect that those that are not the same will be in the future because it will be a way to save them money.

Companies buy and sell brand names all the time. It may, or may not, have anything to do with the actual products. I have been through several oil company mergers and consolidation and cost cutting is the name of the game.

1. Pennzoil
2. Quaker State
3. Valvoline
4. Castrol
5. Havoline
6. All the rest
Interesting, but I suspect meaningless. Installed sales means that a lot of folks really couldn't care less what brand is used, they just want it changed, except of course the branded change places (some will go to Valvoline change shop because of Valvoline, others because its by home). More meaningful to me would be just the rankings for retail sales. Would you happen to have that at your fingertips, Johnny?

Canadian Tire has six house brand lines of oil:

100% synthetic (gold bottle)
synthetic blend (blue bottle), though I think it's phasing out
Fomula 1 (silver bottle)
Supreme (red bottle)
Nugold (black bottle)
Autolab (some dark colour I think)

All their oils apparently come from Shell, and Shell Canada only makes three different lines as far as I know, so you can draw your own conclusions.

The marketing guys are exploiting the companies and the consumers into thinking that we the marketing departments. Marketing costs are a big part of the motor oil business. But that is not much different than many other business.
