I was at O'Reilly's looking for a good oil and filter combination for my first winter oil change. I found Pennzoil Ultra quarts on clearance for $5 so I bought 5 quarts and a Wix filter.

While I was looking at the oil I found some Q Torque Power 4x4 and truck 10w30 on clearance for $3.07 a quart. I have two questions...Is this oil ok for cars (what's the difference?) and would it be ok to use in a car that calls for 5w30 as long as I use it during summer?

Yes you can use it in cars and yes you could use it in the summer months. Might have a few more AW additives than the regular synthetic, but the main difference is in the label. It is/was a good oil.

it will ruin your rings and bearings. immediately send me all bottles that you purchased so that you dont endanger your engine!

it's fine. there is very little difference - a slight difference in additives. an engine doesn't know if its in a car or a truck.... and its not like there is a difference in bearing or piston clearances

I'm actually concerned about the fact that some kind of oil sump (?) spring was changed on my car in 2004 that made the car "require" 5w30. Also, I was wondering if that price is even good for that particular oil?

A good oil for any season.Just think how good recycled oil will be as more and more folks use and drain syn. oils.

PU or $5? Not bad!
I had purchaced 9 qts of QTP from W*M(on clearance) last year in 5W30 and 10W30. I'm using the 10W30 in my 04 Altima right now. Runs fine. IDK if mine was the 4x4 & Truck or just plain QTP I'll have to look at the remaining bottles.

Dont read the oil bottle front label - they are pretty much meaningless(other than the viscosity and a API starburst). Look at the API rating and and ILSAC rating. a 10W would be preferred in the summer. HM oils tend to be a bit thicker and loose the energy conserving rating, Truck and Suv may be a tad thicker too, but they cant put more zddp in there so who knows how the formulation has changed if at all - less vii and more ester syn in the blend?
-What does the SOPUS URL say about their T&SUV oil?

At what temperature?
If it really "required" 5w30 at, say, 30F, you couldn't even start the car at below 20F, because you would have gained an entire grade of viscosity.
I realize that's not exactly how it works, but my point is that if the engine absolutely had to have 5w30, it actually has oil much thicker than that on cold starts at lower ambient temperatures.
Therefore a 10w30 at moderate temperatures isn't going to hurt it at all.
I bought some QTP 10w30 on clearance last year at Wally for $9.00/jug.
While I'm too lazy to go and look, I believe it is a starburst oil, and is thus not especially thick.
A price of ~$3.00/qt is pretty good for this oil, although more than I would pay given my present stash level.
Still, if you are building a minor stash, I'd say that the price is quite reasonable.

Nice!
Each PB's has their own different oils on clearance. I just picked up 2 qts of Valvoline Durablend 5W20 and 1 qt of Castrol SynBlend 10W40 for $2.00 each while I was in for their Rain-X Repel wiper deal($20.00 rebate). Then they also had 2 qts PP 15W40 at $4, 4 qts Valvoline MaxLife 20W50 at $3 which a buddy of mine bought for his motorcycle and we left the 5 qts Lucas Syn at $6(don't remember the grade) for someone else.

Not long ago, PB's had a whole table in the front of the store by the cashier full of car care products all for $1.00. We made a killing. My buddy bought all of the Castrol Motor Cycle Oil, IIRC, 15W40 or 15W50 along with myself scarffing up all of the wax-as-u-dry/quick detail type products and different wgts of Castrol SyntecBlend and a bottle of VSOT, all for a buck each.

Now, I waiting for some real scores on the remaining SM/GF-4 oil after the new SN/GF-5 oils start to blend into the store shelves.
