While on our way back from Cincinnati over the weekend, the OLM on our recently purchased '04 GMC Envoy came on. In my oil stash, I had three leftover top-off quarts of Amsoil (20-50, and XL 5-30 & 10-40) that I had in reserve for my now-sold '97 Sierra. Not letting those quarts go with the sale of the Sierra, I'm going to put those in the Envoy along with 3 quarts of Mobil 1 5w20 (Envoy has a 6qt sump). I know from a technical standpoint it's not how it averages out, but based on label weights, it'll give me something along the lines of an 8w-30 concoction. Went with the 20 weights to bring down the thickness of the 40 & 50 weights. This should get me through til next spring when I'll get the Envoy on the same cycle as our Corolla: Amsoil XL in the spring and fall. Since we're using the Envoy as our tow vehicle for our 2500 lbs travel trailer, it should easily get us through spring. Of course I'm fully expecting to get replies of "potential catastrophic failure".

Thanks for the number! Maybe label averaging isn't too far off afterall.

It's spec'd for 5-30 for all temps or 10-30 above 0 degrees. Looks like I'm somewhere in betwixt.

Not saying there will be an issue or anything but the question has to be asked, are the ad-packs going to be alright with a 50/50 mix like that?

I know the commond concensus is that you only mix with the same brand or within the same add pack chemistry to ensure you get the full effect and they don't clash.

I just wonder how the Amsoil and M1 stack up against one another in the chemistry/ad-pack department?

Love doing stuff like that. How else would you use up oil quarts?
My last fill was some PP, some Quaker State Advanced Durability, and some Pennzoil conventional 5w20 and 5w30 grades. It worked fine obviously.

That I don't know. We just bought the Envoy on the 4th and as far as I know the only thing related to it on the dash is the light that says "Change Eng Oil". However, the CarFax report we ran on it states it was in for an oil change on December 22, 2011 at 103,000 miles. It's got 110k now, so I'm guessing the oil in there now was from that December change.

Sounds about right. From what I'm reading the GM OLM algorithm may be the best of the bunch. Perfect length for a decent off the shelf synthetic.
