Push button start features - Not a good experience.

"What is a shifter button?" asks the man with a manual transmission. 😜

Along those lines, I did discover an easter egg / undocumented feature. On cold starts the engine instantly revs up to 2000 RPM. I suppose this is done to quickly heat up the cats for emissions but it seems bad for engine wear & longevity. If you put it (the manual transmission) in reverse before starting the engine, it doesn't do that, but only revs just over 1000 RPM.

I discovered this because the '95 RX-7 that I owned a long time ago had the same issue, and the same workaround. Looks like Mazda has been consistent over the years.

I bet it’s some kinda safety thing so you don’t go busting through the garage door in the morning!
 
OMG, push buttons are in use 25+ years. More reliable and cheaper to fix than old fashion ignition lock.
This is on par: let me tell you bad experience with multiport injection over carburetor.

Definitely over 25 years.

1912 per the magic of the internet. I wasn't around back then so I can not personally confirm.
 
I have a 2017 Nissan Maxima, and this happened a few years ago, pushed to start it and it fell in, drove it straight to the dealership and they put it back, they no had idea why it happened , nothing was broke, Ive been very gentle with it since.
 
Back in the 70s one of my Uncles had a Dodge Polara with push button transmission. He was so proud of it. He wanted to show it off to everyone. He took me for a fast cruise down a long stretch of highway. When he stopped to turn around one of the buttons went into the dash panel. His reverse button fell right in. I can't really recall how he fixed it. I never forgot the look on his face. Those button were a thing with Dodge for a few years back then. Not sure about Chrysler or Plymouth but probably were too.

My wife's Jeep and my C43 have push button start and keyless entry- just grab the door handle and the car unlocks. The Club Sport needs a key to start it; I can unlock it without a key but to do so I have to push a button on the key fob.
The only "problem" I have is walking up to the Club Sport with the key in my pocket and expecting the car to unlock when I touch the door handle.

LoL. It took the wife the longest time when she first got her car with it to stop going to lock her purse in the trunk and forgetting to take the key fob out. She would be there trying to close the trunk over and over until we realized she was trying to lock her keys in. Thankfully it will not allow one to do that.

The only problem I've ever had is getting into the car and forgetting the fob. I swear they program that fob not detected ding to sound like "dingiot"
 
I'll take a key to start any day. No battery to die in it, no losing it because it's on you're key ring with the rest of you're keys. No forgetting to take it in/out of the car. My poor old mom, the battery died in her fob. She was lost , and furious. Had to go back in the house and find the spare fob just to drive her stupid car. She wishes she still had a key start. All my old cars have key starts , and door lock cylinders, and automatic door fob openers. If the battery dies, you can still open the door and start the car. That won't last forever. The old beaters will die one day.
 
I'll take my crank start any day! Just stick the rod in the front of the car and turn! Might take your arm off but beats all them there fancy fangled "keys" and "push buttons" you young whipper snappers speak of.

You do know your key is coded? You do know that you still have to have fob with keys or without keys in most cars.
Ignition lock for a long time is just electric input. It operates same as button, just more complicated with more parts to break.

A key FOB gives you a warning before the battery dies. She ignored the signs.
 
I have had the ignition switch break in one of my trucks some years back. No, I did not try to have them banned. Just like this story. There was no intention to start any anti or pro push button movement. :ROFLMAO:It was mostly wondering if others had issues. OK, now, I am heading to the store in my horse drawn carriage.;)
Bonus from horse drawn carriage: the horse knows the way home even after you’ve had waaaay too much to drink…

In both of my newfangled and overcomplicated cars the fobs contain keys that will allow you to open the door. And even if the fob battery is dead you can still start the car, as there will be a marked spot on the steering column, dash, or console where you can hold the key fob and the car will start.
Not as convenient or foolproof as a hand crank, but progress continues to march on...
