Went to kmart lastnight and picked up 2 Purolator synthetic filters, one for the veloster and one for the f250. I got them on sale for 6:99 a piece. I was just wondering if anyone has used them. Are they a good filter.

They will work fine for a reasonable interval. Construction isnt as good as the Fram Ultra however. But for $6.99 you got a good deal!

Yeah I use to use kn when they were built in the usa and pure ones mostly but I started using the fram ultras for the last 2 oci . But yesterday I saw the puro syns on sale and figured why not. Ill most likely go pack to the ultras after I use these. Whats a reasonable interval for these filters. I see on the box they say 10,000 miles but I wont even come close to that anyways. Even if I left them on for two oci I would still be around 8000 miles on the filter.

Yeah the few cut open PSLs havent looked as uniform to us neat freaks, but their construction seemed solid. I wouldn't hesitate to run 10k+ miles on one, even if it takes more than 1 OCI

I would leave it on for 2 OCI if it were me

my .02

Great sale score BTW

I'm running a couple, will dissect at the end of an OCI. Just based on what I've seen of the outside and the photo dissections, I'd put mid-pack in the synthetic media filters- below the top-of-the-line Royal Purple and Amsoil EAO, close to the Fram Ultra, and maybe about tied with the Wix synthetic (which I haven't evaluated myself).

I like the Purolator bypass valve and spring best of all on the market (at least comparing dome-end to dome-end filters). But I think the Ultra has somewhat better media, and definitely has a thicker can- which might be useful if your filter hangs down where it might get dinged by road debris. The RP and Amsoil beat the others on both counts, but you pay for it.

The Ultras are rated for up to 15,000 miles with two layers of synthetic media and all the other brands use 1 layer, so call it 7,500 miles +/- 1,000 miles and cut her open.

The WIX XP (and the sister NAPA Platinum) has horrible efficiency ... 50% @ 20 microns. Last in my book of all synthetic filters.

The blue synthetic puros I got say 99 percent at 25 microns. I know the ultras I use say 99 percent at 20 microns. I wasn't gonna buy the puros but the price I got em for I felt why not. I don't run my oil or filters long enough to worry anyways.

Does anyone know if the FRAM ultra have any Flow problems?

I mean with all that filter media and steal.... I know its a respected filter and people here respect them.. However does whats the overall FLOW.....

I had one on my car one b4 but that was a while ago.

My Father Honda Oddessy with 150K miles he put a FRAM ultra and when he started up you could hear a very small knock.. then when he went back to MOTORCRAFT FL810 when he starts up you hear nothing.

Also my dad only lives like 4 hours from me and he can find the MC FL810s easy.. however in my area I cant.

anways.. whats the FLOW on the FRAM ULTRA.. also the FLOW once you had it on for at least 5K miles... I mean when it gets dirty does it clog up??

^^^ The start-up noise wasn't due to the filter's flow ability. It could have been a leaky ADBV.

The Fram Ultra flows well, better than a PureOne which also flows well. Read the rest of the thread from this post onward.
Motorking Data on Ultra Flow

Here's how a medium sized PureOne flows.

Does the Pure Synthetic have the by pass located at the threads like the motorcraft? Activates at what psi?

I haven't seen any Puro made filters with a thread end bypass that wasn't spec'd by a third party, like Motorcraft.

I agree with Z if there was start up knock it was likely ADBV or finichy bypass, filter "flow" is virtually a non-existent issue although it is constantly fretted about. And as far as "flow" goes, the Ultra should be one of the very best out there.

Synthetic media not only flows more readily it has a much higher holding capacity for contaminants, no it will not "clog up".

Purolator uses a bypass valve in the dome end. Go here, put in your vehhicle and you will see what the bypass valve is set to.

Well... that's wretched.

Wix was my go-to for many years, but then I started getting the odd one with a leaky ADBV. Then pretty soon every other one had a leaky ADBV. Then I moved and the nearest parts store was no longer a Wix dealer, so I've just kinda ignored Wix. Darn, I had assumed they were always a good standby choice. Scratch that, at least in synthetics.

I bought a ton of them when I found them at a clearance store around here for $3-4 a piece. I'm using one right now on the Integra and haven't noticed any issues at all. No filter drain-back issues, etc.
