Purolator ONE Blue Can: is it really that bad?

I just purchased the newer Purolator One blue filter PL14610. It's a MANN + HUMMEL with a laser mark "F01005E2" and another number near the maker mark of "1214095s01"
I am a little concerned because this filter wreaks of Kerosene, or a fuel smell. It looks very clean on the inside but the seal looks much darker than what I am familiar with the yellow Pureone filters I have used in the past. Did I get a used filter?
I've read 1 review on Amazon that said the same thing, but I've had rubber parts that smelled the same so I wanted to pick this expert communities brain to see if this is a used oil filter and is this the sign of the times and just another scam?

Most likely just the stink of new materials. If it was used, the base gasket would show signs of lots of permanent deformation. The base gasket in the photo looks full height to me, and no signs of compression.

FWIW, about 18-mos back, I purchased a TRD filter for my Camry. It was the first TRD filter I purchased so I was unfamiliar with its characteristics. It, too, had a fuel/chemical smell to it, and some people were who were familiar with the filter said that, for whatever reason, it was normal.
Recently I purchased a Royal Purple filter for the car. It's made by the same folks who make the TRD filter. The two filters could be considered twins, right down to the same smell.
I've stopped being concerned about it ... some folks have said it's the glue or epoxy that's used in the filters that's causing the smell. All you need to do is determine if it's normal, then move on and forget about it if it is.
As an aside, these are cartridge filters so there's no concern about ADBV, bypass valves, or any thoughts about the filter not being constructed well as it's easy to see everything about them. I don't know how I'd feel about going back to a can and not being able to see what I'm getting.

When they first came out I got 6 of them for the old Corolla they seemed to work well no rips, no tares, no errors. At that time they were just under $6.
UPDATE: I followed up with the Donaldson corporate sales rep. They confirmed they are still on national backorder, despite earlier assurances of a May 26th restock date. Geez.
OP, try finding what you need with Baldwin Filters. Not too far from ND.
How are Baldwins? Comparable to Fleetguard or are they rock catchers? I think there's a couple carriers for Baldwin around here. It looks like the B7449 would cross with my application.
Like Donaldson, Baldwin is known to manufacture many filters for heavy trucks and other commercial applications.
