Been running an L14610 on the truck at 1 year intervals, due to the miles always being under 3k lately. Anyone else switch filter brands after hearing about the filter media tearing on purolators? I'm not sure I want to leave that filter on my truck for the full year interval now.

I'm looking for suggestions for a decent priced well built filter. Not sure I would want to use something like a M1, just because of the possible restriction with such a small high efficiency filter on a high output V6 putting it in bypass too often.

Also, if the low mileage accumulation continues, the thought of something with a silicone ADBV and going two years with less than 6k on it sounds good too...

I'm using a motorcraft on the saturns, i will be using an m1 filter on the avalanche this weekend. I will probably start using m1 filters on my cars.

I am switching over to Napa Silver on my next oil change here in about 4 weeks. I put a Purolator Classic on my wife's Honda a few weeks ago because I had it on hand but that will be the last Purolator I will use. The Napa Silver is just as good, is made by Wix and is cheaper with my AAA discount.

Take a look at Hastings and Baldwin filters. Both have good web sites. Since you live in the Commonwealth, look up some locations of Federated Auto or Fisher Auto Parts stores. They carry Hastings as their store brand. I've also gotten excellent pricing on Hastings filters at www.zorotools.com.

I have one more purolator oil filter in my stash. After I utilize it, I will most likely go to ac delco oil filter for my daughter's S10. I like delcos non score filters, but don't really see them go on sale

Is there a Champion Labs (AC/DELCO) a non-Ecore for your app? That would be good. They work good on Honda and Toyotas too. Wix also as they bypass at the base w/o worries of media washout and many spec tough glass/cellulose media blend. I have installed pur-o-later over the years as a goto, but they were puroleaker in service too often.

Make sure your PCV is working well to help avoid too much moisture in the oil - but short tripping and concomitant water pooling in the sump is a sure bet oil and filter killer.

Does anyone know when the offending Purolators were produced?

The problem may be history now.

Does anyone know which filter manufacturers purchased the same out of spec media from Purolator's vendor?

I wouldn't be concerned.

I have had good luck with e-core filters. STP filters have done the job on many vehicle's that I have owned. I like Champion Labs stuff. AC Delco classics are a tough filter.

use any fram, I switched all my cars to the tough guard. the extra guard will be fine too no matter the fram haters say. I will not be buying anymore purolators again after these media tears. frams will work fine

This is the most important question. Every manufacturer has glitches. If they're all "through the pipe" already and the problem is indeed history, great.

We need to get more opened up to see if the problem is gone. I am not taking a chance since I had a P1 that tore. I bought it last spring. I am now using a Wix on that car and Micro-guard on my older car. The mg thats on my old Dodge is an e-core and it replace a puro classic that was noisy on start up. I have a Wix made MG waiting for the next change on it. Bottom line is I have had 2 bad puros at the same time on 2 different cars, and I don't trust Purolator any more.

Has anyone opened up a new Purolator to see if the tears are already there or a by-product of being in service? I have several I just bought on clearance from K-Mart, both Classic and Pure One's. I'm tempted to take one of each and open them up just to see. Cost for both was about $6 so not that big of a deal. I just don't understand how to post pictures.

I highly doubt the tears are there coming off the assembly line. Best theory is due to the wide pleat spacing near the seam, which is where the tears always show up, the oil flow caused the pleat to bend over with causes the media to tear near where the media is glued to the end caps.
