Purolator Filter empty at oil change

I've got a 1995 Honda Accord EX 4cyl (VTEC) that I'm almost done "cleaning out the engine". When I got it 4,000 miles ago, the oil was extemely nasty, even after 50 miles on the first oil change.

I don't care what anyone says about the color/darkness, after 50 miles, it should be CLEAN, not black.

Anyway, I've got it where I feel it is much cleaner, so I haven't yet started using a PureONE filter. I've been using the plain 'ol Purolator filter. When I change the oil and take the old filter off, hardly any oil is left. This is a horizontal mount.

No filter/oil has been installed over 2500 miles since I've had this car. Is this normal? I kept the last filter and haven't yet cut it open.

I've just never seen a filter that did not drain oil all over my hand when removing it.

The Pure Ones hold more oil than the AC Delco, Frams & Motorcrafts I've used in the past four years.... alot more - probably double.

I have never purchased a Premium Plus. I always prefer paying $1-$2 more for the Pure One's better features.

I use a cordless drill & 1/4" drill bit to alleviate oil messes. I drill a hole in the bottom-side of the filter for a 'well-placed removal" of oil from the filter before unscrewing it.

And you think the oil pan on a 10 year old car where all your new oil went to was spotlessly clean with no sludge to contaminate your fresh oil?

Wanna make a guess in 50 miles how much your "new" oil circulates through the engine?

I've got the same car as you. I usually get a little oil dribbling out of my filters during oil changes(Bosch, Purolator Premium Plus, and Supertech), but not a whole lot. I had one Premium Plus on, and the whole time it was on, I'd constantly get the oil pressure light flickering more than normal after startup. I think the premium plus drainback valves are a little suspect.

I think you mis-understood my post. I was asking if it was normal for there not to be much oil left in these pure Plus filters.


Filter guy, yeah, I care what everybody thinks. I was just stating that even though the oil was 50 miles old, it was nasty and I was not gonna let it stay in very long. I dumped it at 500 miles. Yes, I am sure the idiot who was the previous owner didn't really care about maintenance. THAT is quite obvious.


Palut, wow. I just looked at your valve cover post again and I don't think I need to pull mine. I can see a marked difference in the looks of my head through the oil filler cap versus yours.

Try some oil changes with MMO.
