I'm quickly coming up on the 16K service on my Fiat, and my wife's Fiat is due for its first oil change at 6 months (3500 miles.)

I have been using PU in my car but can only find the SM rating locally. Should I stick with it or am I better changing to something else that is rated SN?

"HyundaiGuy" and "HyundaiGal" but drive Fiat's !!!

Joking aside, if your Fiat's spec API SN the you should use SN to avoid possible warranty problem if a slight chance that you need some engine work while the cars are under warranty.

I'd use the SM with no hesitation. It actually had higher levels of some additives (Boron) than the SN. The primary advantage of the SN is it is GTL (gas-to-liquid) and has a ridiculously low NOACK. If you run uber-extended OCIs or have a VERY hot running engine, this may be a concern. With a Fiat, I don't think you have the engine temperature problem, but I admittedly have no experience with those engines. I am a huge fan of PU so I would use any flavor I could get my hands on... JMHO.

Please tell us how a Fiat dealer will know the difference between the two oils if in the sump?

Run the SM without any hesitation. It is a great oil and sometimes I wish I could find the SM formula. When it came out it was stout! Not that the SN isn't great as well. USE THE SM!

I'm sure if it came down to paying for a blown engine, the dealer could send in a UOA to see what the oil looks like and "draw a conclusion" as to what oil is/was being used, based on what happens to be "in" the oil at the time of the sample.....?

I wouldn't hesitate to use the SM rated PU.
I have used SM rated Mobil 1 in my Cruze turbo simply because I had it. I probably wouldn't BUY SM oil unless it was discounted.

OT: How does the SM version of PP compare with the SN...I ask because I have some to use up.
