PS leacking bad

My Power Steering on 92 VW was working fine until yesterday. I changed the fluid last week using ATF III. VW calls for CHF but in the manual it says ATF and CHF are 100% compatiable. Older VW all used ATF. VW switched to CHF due to better flow during winter months.

Can ATF III damage the seals in PS rack? Zero leak before fluid change and now it is leaking badly.

I don't think it would damage the seals, but the detergents in the ATF might have cleaned away a bunch of gunk that was stopping up the leak.

Depends on which CHF you are talking about. From that vintage, the CHF 7.1 was probably used and I recall that it is compatible with ATF. The CHF 11S I have heard it may not be compatible.

You might try our HPSGlide Power Steering Fluid since it contains a seal swell additive.
