Propane conversion, is it worth it?

Yes, propane tank size is a valid consideration. Not just how full the tank is but how big. The 8K watt propane generator says it requires a 250 gal tank at 0F degrees.

I also have read that propane/natural gas only engines (no gasoline) have a higher compression ratio, but cannot confirm that.

I've done gasoline, diesel and propane generators.

My experienced opinion: Go conventional in every way.

I like portables for emergency backup best, because they can be stored inside, kept dry and disconnected, safe from lightning strikes and other hazards.

I like gasoline for portable units. Easy to find gasoline anywhere. Your car, your neighbors car (just kidding) and so on.

I like diesel for more substantial gensets. It's a more energy dense fuel. Often more than double the efficiency of propane. Plus heating oil and, gasp, even used engine oil, olive oil and other oils will blend in, in a pinch.

Some interesting thoughts: VP Fuels company makes a storage fuel called C9. It's an unleaded that simply lasts forever. Great fuel to keep in a portable genset. Avgas 100LL also lasts forever and won't ever gum up a carburetor, ever. It simply evaporates. 100LL is a great storage fuel too, and commonly available at airports.
