It's dying because of huge staff cutbacks in every corner of the newsroom. Everything is done ultra-fast, usually on the fly, without backup, and in any profession that's how mistakes happen.

The journalism industry has been hit extremely hard by downsizing. Now, writers shoot [censored] photos, photographers write incomplete captions, headlines and content in general are vetted only with spell-check for the most part. Sad, really.

The favoritism shown by journalsist local and national is a major reason why they are loosing money. I can't recallt he survey but IIRC it was a Rasmusthem or Quinnipiac which showed trust in major media (ABC,CBS,NBC, NYT, Etc...) as only lagging behind Congress!! That says quite a bit.

Bingo. Having worked at a newspaper for the last 4 years (not as an editor or anything -- in IT), I can tell you that it's all about being the first to publish a story and get things online as fast as possible. This gives them almost no time to proofread or edit things.

Issues of trust aside, THE major reason is that advertisers (who make up the lion's share of revenue, not subscribers) have multiple low-cost or virtually no-cost alternatives to market their products and services that did not exist even 10 years ago. These advertisers don't need print publications or TV programs anywhere near as much as they used to.

In addition, the Internet provides a delivery system for news content that is free or almost free, and in the vast majority of cases people will not pay for what they are getting for free. Sadly, as I'm sure our newspaper IT member here who contributed to this thread can attest, a free DELIVERY method is an entirely different thing than what it takes to GENERATE the content.

Edited for...would you believe? A typo!!

I guess the reporters should be schooled in proper English. Can't expect the editor (who I presume is good with his English) to redo all the sentences in the paper.

chiks, is that something a reporter wrote? Because of the writing style and the platform on which it appears, this looks much more like user-generated content.

Click on the link and read the story. Pretty sad, yet funny.
