Proof that Castrol is popular on the west coast

All our work orders where I work nights either say Castrol Bulk or Castrol Synthetic so when I do my changes I grab a Castrol that meets the spec of the car.

Would I use Castrol in my car? No, I prefer running an under-rated oil like QSUD to an over-rated oil like Edge.

And I wouldn't even put GTX in a lawnmower.

Castrol was always Mobil's #1 competitor. That may have changed over the last few years due to increased demand of synthetics and different brands trying to grab market share.

I personally do not like Castrol products. For years Syntec was probably the most overrated synthetic oil on the market.

For years Mobil 1 has been the mot overrated synthetic on the market. I personally don't like Mobil products

This actually looks like a pretty typical Walmart oil section, with a number of grades of each brand out of stock, especially the jugs.
There are a couple of Walmarts in our general area that are almost always fully stocked, while there are others that are almost always very thin.
Anyway, GTX remains a popular oil in most markets, despite being priced higher than most conventionals and having an add pack that could have been cribbed from VWB, which is typically less expensive.
Were I shopping your Walmart, I'd choose VML over GTX for only a buck seventy more for a jug.
OTOH, I can always shop my garage, which features both some GTX and lots of Maxlife to go along with lots of other oils, including a large stash of FAR G-Oil which I really should start using in something.

Pricing must vary, here I always see it priced the same as the competition at that tier. Conventional, HM, full synthetic no matter it is priced the same as the other dogs in the fight.

Just from looking at shelves I'd say Syntec does not move real well here, Mobil 1 seems to flog everything at full syn level, but the GTX and HM seem to do really well.

Same here, all the name brands are the same price except the Mobil 5000 is a couple bucks cheaper than the other dinos and Mobil HM is a couple bucks cheaper than the other HMs.

Where was that picture taken?

It doesn't look like a Walmart in the north or east bay.

You're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but not facts. Facts clearly point to Mobil 1 being a superior oil to Castrol Syntec on a historical basis.

TEOST results from approx 2006.

Syntec - 26 mg
Mobil 1 - 6 mg

Indirectly, this is why Honda went with Mobil 1 for the HTO-06.

Castrol never gained approval for GM 4718M for those years as well, pointing to a possible deficiency in their over-hyped domestic Syntec 5w30. Clever marketing though. Think with your dipstick man.

Edge w/Syntec has been reformulated since 2006.

I think I'm sending buster some Castrol for xmas. Buster, watch your mailbox...

True, but why should I trust Castrol all of a sudden? In fact, their PDS's are worse than they used to be, which was never a strong point with them.

Quote:
Mobil paid for an independent lab (likely, SW research) to run the industry standard deposit evaluating TEOST tests to compare M1 to it's #2 competitor in the world. Mobil 1 scored 5.3, #2 Competitor (Syntec) scored 26.4.

Also, Mobil tested Clean 7500 vs the #1 Syn Blend in the world (Syntec Blend). With it's 27% detergent additive boost vs it's base GF-4 requirement "Mobil Clean" bulk oil (formerly Drive Clean at retail), Clean 7500 scored 14.6 (yes, almost 1/2 the deposits of Castrol's best full syn Syntec), Syntec Blend scored 39.8.

If you can find it, look at the HTO-06 results provided BY HONDA (not XOM) of the off-shelf branded synthetics. I have no doubt they are better now though.

Thanks for the info Buster.

Curious why Honda didn't stick to Idemitsu as a supplier. Maybe costs?

I never liked Mobil in their SM days, but now they are competitive with their products in it's SN formulation.

I'd give Castrol a chance but it seems their powerful marketing has gotten more to their own heads than anyone else. And they are the reason that N.A. is awash in fake syn but I won't go into that as we can carefully select oils that are comparable now.

No problem. I'm not saying this data still holds true today, as it obviously doesn't, but in terms of reputation goes, Castrol has a weak one. IMO>

Do you have a link or know where the results are at?

The only results available was the picture above, which does not label any particular brand.

Good catch, this was taken at the WM on Florin Rd in Sacramento.

My walmart tends to go through Castrol Edge quickly.

It is the only place you can get Castrol Edge (the gold bottle) for the lowest price.
