Double whammy burn

Product

Recalled fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to wholesalers and restaurants nationwide.

Symptoms of

Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that is contaminated with Salmonella, and the symptoms usually last four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.

Stores affected

Distributors, wholesalers, restaurants, and food service companies nationwide. At this time, Coast Citrus Distributors does not appear to supply jalapeños directly to grocery stores.

Chipotle and QDOBA both received product that was imported by Coast Citrus Distributors from Sinaloa, Mexico. Chipotle switched their jalapeño supplier for stores beginning on 7/20/2026; QDOBA also ceased the use of jalapeños in their stores on 7/28/2026 and all QDOBA restaurants are no longer serving jalapenos. Given their actions to remove product from their stores, FDA does not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak.

FDA is working with Coast Citrus Distributors to determine the full distribution of these products. This advisory will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Man, I love jalapeños.

I'm happy to report that the "Hurricane" pizza that I had has not resulted in "Butt Covid". (It's been more than 72 hours)

That thing was loaded with jalapeños! Well, my half was anyway. My wife requested that her half be free of jalapeños. :cautious:

Sourcing fresh produce from a third world nation that has no enforceable food safety codes? What could possibly go wrong?
Now U.S. lettuce growers are plowing their crops under because so many people got sick from human feeces contaminated Mexican lettuce everyone has given up on the product. A large fast food chain with healthy options, Salad and Go has just declared bankruptcy and closed all the restaurants in Texas, Oklahoma and Nevada. I suspect problems with Mexican produce is directly responsible, even if they sourced no product's from there.
And now it's jalapeños. Stay tuned, more to come.

But wait a minute. Isn't the government bad? That's one of today's battle cries, isn't it?
Since the 1770's. Pretty sure though the framers wanted some controls on imports. Food safety of these imports, yes we can get a strong consensus on this. Yet............the knuckleheads we elect.........

Wonder if my microwave nachos gets them to 150°F 🤔
Oh yeah and those canned crappy ones, they are safe.

USA used to grow its own peppers fer cryin' out loud.

Technically the FDA is in Mexico, and does get to Mexican farms for testing, and the Mexican government is very supportive of this - they don't wish to kill the golden goose either. So what your asking is not inhibited by the 3rd world country part. 20% of the FDA was let go in the last round. 🤷‍♂️ There has always been foodborn illness. Could be part of the lay offs or simply that were in an election cycle so its being promoted. I guess we shall see if it goes away after Nov 5.

Without Mexico we would just have to do without lettuce for the most part in the winter. Or pay greenhouse rates - which seems to be what no one wants to do.

Given this Cyclospora cayetanensis cannot be washed off, we may be at a point where fresh vegetables are going to become either risky or very expensive, and I am sure we will choose risky.

There's always recalls and people getting sick. It's only when the media decides to make a big deal out of it that people pay attention. If it was just 3 restaurants or 8 grocery stores in Iowa and less than a dozen sick, it would only make local news. Even Twinkies have had a recall for Salmonella and it just got a 10 second note on TV news.
