I have a chest freezer that went on the blink. I ended up not keeping the stuff down low cold, even though there is frost and ice on the top. I un-plugged it, cleaned it out and left it totallly de-frost for days. I plugged it in and I can hear it running, light buzzing, it will frost up the top corner, but nothing down in the bottom. Anybody have any experience with these? Its about 5 years old. New Freezers are about $600. So I d like to explore if its possible to fix, before scrapping. I understand most appliances are throw aways with reverse enginneering, not to last. But I also hate to pitch it, since its aparently working somewhat to freeze up the top. Any ideaa?

One assumes it has a freon leak. But unlike a car with A/C and lots of joints and O-rings, a refrig or freezer is pretty much of a soldered shut system.
If you have Ice build up near the top and around the door you may need a new door seal. The bad/old seal allows the warm moist air in that causes the ice. I just had to replace my door seal for this very problem. As for the cooling issue at the bottom I'm not sure if they are related or not and replacing the seal for you may be throwing good money after bad. (the following is not an advertisement just a place to start) I found my door seals cheapest at www.appliancepartspros.com, they were half the price of most of the other places I looked. Use some wide low cost packing tape to seal around the door and let it run for a day or so to see how it performs when the door is properly sealed. If it fixes the problem then spend the money for a new gasket, if not, then you did not throw good money after a bad unit.
A filthy condenser will burn up the compressor. That's prolly the #1 cause of failure on these. You can try cleaning the condeser.
+1^ We have a refrigerator in our basement that gets extremely dirty and then doesn't cool very well.....once I clean the coils and vacuum out the entire lower, it cools like new again. I usually have to clean it about every three months or so since it is at the rear lower door and opens out to the fields. I've seen freezer temps go from 27'F dirty down to 2'F clean.....makes a huge difference plus the refrigerator runs much quieter when clean.

That was the simple fix to a Bosch side by side I had. Multiple refrigeration "techs" were too lazy/ignorant to check the fan - all they wanted/knew to do was replace pc boards.
Most chest freezers that I've worked on/aware of , do not have any fan in either inside/outside.
