problem using a filter whose OD is 3 mm larger?

I maintain three different vehicles (a 2002 Honda Civic, a 2007 Saturn Vue, and a 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe) that all use a Wix 51356, Purolator PL14610, K&N HP-1010, or equivalent filter. It's really nice being able to "stock" a single size for use on them all.

Recently, I was able to get my hands on a case of DENSO oil filters for a REALLY good price. I ordered the 150-1010's because they were spec'd to have an OD of 68 mm whereas the 150-1009's have an OD of 65 mm. When I looked up the specs on the Wix 51356, Purolator PL14610, and K&N HP-1010, they all listed an OD of 68 mm (i.e. 2.69 in) so I figured I was getting the "right" thing by ordering the 150-1010's.

However, when the filters arrived I found that they were just a little larger in diameter than the others. Apparently the DENSO OD spec was for the can and the other specs were at the base and included the lip outside of the gasket. So the DENSO 150-1010's are 71 mm at the base versus the others which are all 68 mm. (I suspect the DENSO 150-1009's are 68 mm at the base.)

Does anyone think this is going to be a problem? The fit of oil filters isn't so exact/precise that a discrepancy of 3 mm in diameter is going to cause any problems or make a difference, is it?

I tend to think everything will be just fine given that a DENSO cross reference search returns both 150-1009 and 150-1010 when searching for the Wix 51356. Likewise, a Wix cross reference search returns 51356 when searching for the DENSO 150-1009 and/or 150-1010. So it seems as if the two DENSO parts are really interchangeable. Do you all agree?

Trust me.... you will have ZERO problems using the filters with a slightly wider gasket.

I have used the Purloator L-20073 filter (Wix 51347) oil filters on Hondas that spec the L-14610 size oil filter.

Next time you go to Advance Auto Parts or PepBoys take both filters L-20073 and L-14610 out of their box and compare the gaskets, you will be shocked at the difference at the width. The L-20073 looks like it will leak, but on all the Hondas I installed it on, there are zero leaks.

Wow you are throwing around a lot of numbers......

Did you buy filters that are supposed to fit these vehicles? If you did the only problems are usually physical outside dimension clearance problems.

There are times when an engine can take two different size filters for a lot of different reasons.

I purchased filters from two different manufactures for the same application and gasket diameters were different, think maybe by 1/16 inch.

I run FL1A size on the Aerostar 3.0 V6 and it calls for FL400 which has slightly smaller gasket diameter, but the mounting surface on the Aerostar is same diameters (ID and OD) as on the F150 that takes FL1A. They built a good deal of leeway into the mounting surface.

See how the gaskets mate up. They can be off by a couple 1/10th's here and there. Otherwise, the can diameter, including the lip, is a matter only if the physical environment interferes with it.

Can you spin them on and tighten them? Yes? Do they leak? No? Good.

Sort of. The DENSO online catalog doesn't list a filter for my Nissan or Saturn. But when I do a cross-reference search against a filter that fits these vehicles (e.g. a Mobil 1 M1-110), the DENSO site gives me two part numbers: 150-1009 and 150-1010. I purchased the latter because I thought it had the "right" OD, but turned out to be 3 mm larger.

My Nissan can take the equivalent of a Mobil 1 M1-108 or M1-110. The only difference is height; the M1-108 is a "shorty" and the M1-110 is just a bit taller. Since there's enough clearance for the taller one and that's the size my Saturn and Honda call for, that's the size I go with.

On the filters I bought, the gasket lines up at the outer edge of the gasket on an otherwise "correct" filter. So it's only off by about 1.5 - 2.0 mm (i.e. less than 1/10th of an inch).

Based on what I'm hearing from you all that replied (thanks by the way), it doesn't sound like I should have any problems. Like Gary said, I guess I'll know there's a problem if I end up with a leak.

I changed the oil in my Nissan today and the filter worked fine.

This is a Mobil 1 MI-108 filter. As you can see, there's some room outside of its diameter.

Once the filter is removed, you can see the mounting surface is wide enough to accommodate some variance in filter diameter.

This is the new DENSO 150-1010 filter. No problem with the slightly larger diameter. It fits just fine.

You might also notice this filter is a little longer. There's plenty of clearance, so I'm not sure why Nissan spec'd the car to use such a short one.
