Pro Line # 24651, 5,xxx miles CUT OPEN

This pro Line filter and whatever oil was on for 5,xxx miles. Vehicle is a 07' Ford Freestyle with over 190k on it. Put a FU XG2 and MaxLife Full Synthetic 5w30 provided by friend. ADBV was rock hard and pleat spacing not great. Made in January 12, 2016, Line G and 1st shift. As crazyoilman will say "OMG, it has Louvers!"

Car 51 look at those louvers there is little chance for that filter to tear looking at the pictures the flow has to be cut back at least 50% great job Purolater have the filters in bypass 50% of the time and you will get a lot less tears..

Of course you can start using better media but that's just silly talk slowing down the flow is cheaper and makes more sen$e

Do you have any conclusive evidence that louvers restrict flow or is this claim purely a hypothesis. That being said it looks like that filter was shedding adhesive material.

Those louvers don't look too bad ... not as open as I'd like to see them but I doubt they were choking any flow on this particular filter.

Here are some louvers I'd say are not formed well and could cause some delta-p across the filter.

Of course there isn't. Filter manufacturers would test this thoroughly.
 
Restricting flow by using louvers (which I am not buying) would only increase stress on the media, not lessen it. A properly flowing filter is likely running just a few psi differential, if you are restricting flow and causing bypass it means the media is hovering around 8-14 psi depending on model. Much MORE stressful on the media, not less.

Kind of ... I think if the louvers were really restrictive the delta-p would be mostly across the metal center core itself, and not the media. The media would have it's own delta-p associated with the flow through the media, and the center tube itself would have it's own delta-p due to the louver restriction. The media and center tube together would make the consolidated delta-p that the bypass valve would see.

I don't think filter manufacturers use louvers to prevent media tearing ... it's more for easier and cheaper manufacturing IMO. Properly formed louvers will flow more total volume due to more flow area than the old hole design.

That I 100% agree with.

As far at the media and bypass, the bypass is to keep the media from more stress than it can handle and keep the engine from being oil starved obviously. I doubt anyone is worried about protecting the center tube it should handle way more than media could.

Irregardless keeping a filter hovering around bypass levels is way harder on the media than not. The idea that louvers are to decrease flow and open the bypass frequently to protect the media is backwards.
 
^^^ I agree with your last post. I was just saying that there is a separate delta-p for the center tube and a separate delta-p for the media - the same as if each was standing alone and getting the same volume of oil flow through them.

Imagine if the media and center tube were separated by 1/4" of space and if 5 GPM was flowing through each. The media might have a 2 PSI delta-p, but the center tube might have a 8 PSI delta-p if the louvers were really choked down. The delta-p is a function of the flow volume, viscosity and the resistance to flow of each "layer" (media and center tube). The delta-p across the bypass valve would then be 10 PSI.
