Anyone know about PRO-Blend Engine Cool? (Not Pro-Long)
This is their statement:

#8012 - ENGINE COOL - OIL ADDITIVE
Oil Additive
Use with regular or synthetic oil
coats hot metal
Instantly cools engine oil up to 57°
Cools radiator water up to 7°
A must for towing, climbing and stop and go traffic
Reduces engine noise
Doubles life of lubricated parts
Significantly aids in hot and cold weather starting
Increases fuel mileage
Add every third oil change or 10,000 miles
Eliminates dry starts

I was impressed about 10 years ago with a demonstration where a motor drived shaft hooked to an ameter (sp?) was stopped with another bar hooked to a torque wrench. W/O lube it took very little pressure to stop it. With standard oil, it took around 50 lbs to stop it. With a little Pro_blend added, I couldn't stop it. Then the whole thing was wiped dry and It was hard to stop and the oil that you couldn't wipe off was drawn to the area of contact instead of running from it.

I used it on a few cars back then, and it did lower the temperature which in my turbo charged Merkur was important. My wifes car lost it's oil due to a wire interfering with the gasket and the car was driven about 20 miles with no apparent damage. We drove the car another 50000 miles before it was sold.

It used to be called Engine treatment and their claim was that it was a metal treatment that was absorbed into the surface of the metal and act to keep an oil film in place. Some engine builders used it as an assembly lube.

Any comments or experience out there?

$18 for this snake oil that doesn't even hint on what actually is in it or how it actually works!

Find us some real information. There's always a new brand name on the same old stuff that's been making the rounds of the county fairs for years (and now the 'net).

If this stuff was really the dogs bollocks why wouldn't the big oil companies put this stuff in their products?

Believe it, Mobil/EXXON etc have the R & D departments to find out if this stuff works or not.

Wouldn't they rather have our hard earned $$$ for a product that really works, if in fact it really did?

PASS!!!

That's my question. It's not an oil treatment as much as a metal treatment according to their claims. I used it in 3 cars every 30000 miles, never had a problem, so I don't know if it helped, hurt or whatever. The 0be that was driven 20 miles with an empty sump is the only thing that made me wonder.

Thanks for the responses, I'll pass for now.

Pep Boys just started carrying the stuff, between $12-$50 depending on the size.

Guess what? I just came back from a race shop in San Diego, and he had a whole table of these bottles from 8oz to 16oz cans for $1.00 each...I bought two, and want to do a VOA to find out just what the heck it is. There is no MSDS sheet to be found online, so no help there.

There has to be another 30 bottles or so left at the shop. The owner used the products from Pro-Blend for years in his Nissan/Datsun racecars, and even in his SpecRX7's (Dave Turner, founder of Spec7 and Pro7 classes, at Dave Turner Motorsports). He just couldn't sell them for what Pep Boys is, and wants to clear them out now that he races motorcycles and has no room in the shop.

"Add to engine oil"
"Works with Synthetics or Regular Oil"
"Add 1.5 oz per Quart"
Apply every second oil change to street engines"
"Stopps piston scuffing and bearing failure in circle and drag motors- gas and alcohol"
"Seat rings before adding"
"Triples Valve spring life"
"Stops all bluing, galling, wrist pin and thrust surface wear"
"Go Karts -Gas/Alcohol" use 4 ozs."

Here's the kicker----
"CONTAINS NO TEFLON (PTFE), MOLY, OR SILICONE"

No MSDS available, so what the heck is it then? What's left, ZDDP? Ester? Jojoba?

It is very thin and watery, not at all like a thick or honey additive, and is not striated (sp?)-- does not form layers.

If this or any other product really produced the advantages claimed every race team in the country would be using it. Every fleet manager would have it in his fleet. Every oil company would put it in their oil.

Somehow, I don't think that is the case.

additive bashing never seems to stop around here.

You think that the oil companies are the great and powerful oz that if they ain't got it it doesn't exist.

Do you think oil companies list everything they put in the oil and if they do tell you in what amounts they're added and how they're blended

NO i didn't think so WHY are additives any different.

I like how alot of us pick up a MSDS or a product spec sheet and think we're the engineers at MOBIL it tells you like three things and everyone bases their opinion on that geez I could get more info from a used oil analysis than listening to anything about who's oil is better. Frankly NONE of the oils are better additives are the only thing that makes oil better

this vicious cycle needs to stop. I'm not saying problend or any of them are the answer but its never wow i'll look into that or here i know about that instead the first thing said is SNAKE OIL its like why even have a additive thread on a mainly oil dominated site if all your going to do is run it into the ground except for two that sponsor the thread and they're considered the best in the world when they use some of the same ingredients that the so called snake oils use or snake fuel or whatever its insane instead of complaining about this get these manufacturers on the phone and dig into them and find out whats going on with these products. If you get a moron on the phone keep trying tell you get someone important that can go into some detail about the product

I truly believe that everyone in the oil forums including myself are being unfair to products like these that are being introduced and people are looking for information not opinions i'm just as bad as the rest i hate teflon an some others but lets get the whole story before the same old statements are made over and over and over and over and over and over and over its getting old isn't it?

salsahh - this vicious cycle needs to stop. I will address just the last part of your statement where you suggest the consumer should "dig into them and find out whats going on with these products".

I think you have it exctly backwards. It is the responisibilty of the seller to present such compelling data that I gladly and willingly give my $$ to them for their product.

To claim that a product "doubles the life of lubricated parts" and then present no objective comparative data is at least ineffective in my judgement.

When psedo-scientific demos are done to demonstate "this and that" I recall what my Grandpa told me. He said "A wise man knows what he doesn't know."

I know I have no idea whether the demo is of any scientific value in proving some product will produce a particular result in my engine. I just have no way of judging the value of the test. So, for me at least, the test is worthless. I am pretty sure though that the test will be favorable to their product, after all they selected the test.

The bottom line is that the seller has to convince the buyer that his product will provide a value to the buyer. Most oil and fuel aftermarket additive sellers fail to convince an informed groups like you find on BITOG. They are more sucessful convincing the relativly uninformed "general public".

One final comment. You seem to be disturbed about a few aftermarket oil and fuel additives that are "touted" in the threads of BITOG. I was too. At first I thought maybe the whole site was set up to sell these few products, skeptic that I am.

Then I read the posts from maybe 10 of what I consider to be the more knowledgable people here. I did a search on their names and read hundreds of their posts. Their positions on oils and their properties were consistant, reasonable, and backed up with data (academic and user based). Now I don't agree with everything they say but I understand why they say it and respect their opinions.

When the vast majority of the very knowledgable people on BITOG feel the LC, FP, AutoRx, GC, or whatever really provides a value to the customer, I tend to believe these products really do what they are claimed to do.

By the way, none of these products claim I can run my engine without oil, will triple valve spring life, double the life of my engine, or give me some outrageous increse in MPG.

I was in the pits at a drag race in So Cal 25 years ago and met the guy who owned PROBLEND. Several dragsters were using it and getting very favorable results. The one I talked to was the "Arras" (not sure of the spelling) dragster. They claimed they'd tried several additives and found only one they could see real results with. This company has not done infomercials, or advertise much but company reps have quietly been around the racing business for years. They do sell in bulk to other companies who repackage.
Had a friend who had a jacked up truck. The acute angle of the driveshaft was very hard on u-joints and he had to replace them every 10,000 miles sometimes less. He tried all of the greases availiable locally, none seemed to be superior. PROBLEND grease stopped his throwing u-joint problem.

salsahh salsahh salsahh

You have got to get some help here, my boy. This obsessive behavior and the need to change others is just getting out of hand.

We are what we are ...and we (probably) like being that way.

Q:How many salsahhs does it take to change a skeptic?

A: Only one. But the skeptic has to want to change.

btw- you don't have Prolong and Duralube posters on your bedroom wall do you?? (visions of Fox Mulder's office in the X-Files ..."I want to believe")

salsahh, one has to remember that all the coments on this site or any other site are just opinions and most of them have no idea what they are talking about..one has to listen and do the homework.

here in colorado the nhra and scca use pro-blend for their racers and the off road people..what this stuff does is when metal gets above 400 deg.or so oil runs away from the metal i use pro blend racing #8080 it put the oil back to the hot metals....you surely notice the difference...this makes an oil close to perfect..
