Price variations in fuel

I've noticed that atleast with diesel fuel, they sure have quite a bit of a price difference and and that really adds up when you fill up 60 or 70 gallons at a time between two trucks. Valero is typically the cheapest and other stations can be $.25-.30 cents higher a gallon. Is it best just to go with the cheapest fuel?

Going back many decades from my father was the logic to always use the cheapest you can find. I still will buy the cheapest I can find without going out of my way too much which sometimes means it may not be the cheapest in the area. Never paid any attention to top tier fuel or not.

The only diesel I ever owned was a boat that I only filled up at the Marina where it was kept with the red dyed diesel fuel. Not sure where the Marina got it from, I would imagine a cheaper supplier is where it came from.

I try and use the pumps that have bio diesel. Although, it's just a sticker on the pump. How do we know they actually have it in the tank?

At least for gas, I generally feel better about buying from a high-volume station.
The only tank of "bad" gas that I think I've ever purchased came from a higher-end brand known for its high-quality fuel, but it wasn't a busy location. Since then, I've tried to buy from busy stations, and this seems to correlate with price (as well as often location).
I'd run that Valero fuel with confidence.

FWIW with diesel look for busy stations and cheap prices. I would avoid biodiesel if you can. It usually costs the same amount and you get less mileage. I buy from my local Speedway station. They accept my Open Roads RV discount card.

The only ones that aren't busy are the really old independent stations. It's pretty much all big chain stations like heb, kroger, Walmart, buccees and circle k.

I typically fuel up @ Costco. They're almost always cheaper, sometimes considerably, and it's top tier gas. If I don' go there, QuikTrip would be the next best price, also Top Tier. Both are super busy. The cost of regular unleaded is 2.54 @ Costco as I write this.

I like Costco also, but ****, the congestion getting from the street to the pump and 5-10 minute wait, honestly half the time I just give up and pay 5-10 cents more the next day somewhere else.

(Amazing, Costco ALWAYS busy/packed, they got to make a million dollars a day per store)

I very much like cheap, but I like waiting in the Costco line even less than I like saving money, so I do not bother with Costco's fuel.

I quit Speedway after my truck froze up the day after filling up at one. Of course they denied that their fuel was the issue. I had the receipts and they should have owned up to it but they wouldnt. Fortunately for me I had connections with the tow company and got it towed for minimal costs. An hour in my garage with the heat on along with a half bottle of PS 911 and a new filter I was back running again. Had I been a regular consumer and needed to have it towed to a shop I have no doubt it would have run me $500

One day after work I stopped at buccees and the tanker truck driver was sitting on his 5 gallon bucket out by the hoses making sure some idiot didn't run them over. Totally forgot to ask him whether or not they actually had b20 in the diesel at buccees. I knew I had something to ask, but was too tired at the time to care I guess. I think the sticker on the pump says up to b20 technically 2 percent is all that's needed for the right amount of lubricant.

Interesting. I’ve never had an issue with Speedway. I can’t recall what station I used prior to my gelling issue in January of 2019 but I know it wasn’t speedway because the station didn’t exist.

I doubt it was widespread, more likely a station issue that never got addressed between MENSA meetings in the breakroom. Their corporate attitude to the problem made me cut that pony out of the herd.
